Humminbird depth issues

I have a 1198 at console and a 998 at bow. Neither one ever shows the correct depth, what can possibly be wrong?

Obvious question; do you have them both on at the same time; if so the transducers are probably interfering with each other

Most of the time im only running my 1198 as the only time my 998 is on is when im up front fishing. My 1198 has a thru hull and a side imaging transducers and my 998 transducer is mounted on TM. On a side note with 1198 set up that way when putting around what transducer is it using or is it always using thru hull for depth?

I have no idea if this is your problem or not. I had a 789 and a 787 on the Baycat that I once had. Neither unit would read the depth correctly. The way I solved the issue was to turn off the automatic depth range mode. I selected the depth range manually. Once I did that, they would read perfectly. I never seemed to have any interference from one unit to another.

When using a side imaging and 2D (thru hull) transducers on the same unit a Y cable must be installed. The Y cable hard wires the 2D transducer to the depth read out, consequently the 2D transducer is always used for depth readings. This is a good thing because the SI transducer will not read depth on plane. To help eliminate the 2D transducer as the culprit, you can use either 2D transducer with both the front unit and the console unit. I believe this is done through the network menu. Both units must be on to do this.. I have the 1198 and the 898 units installed on the front and console and run both units simultaneously and have had few problems. Talk to Humminbird service desk and they are usually very helpful.

by what means do you know that the readings are wrong. current lake level to topo map. topo depths are from pool level.

By wrong depths I mean sometimes it will say im in 5 ft of water and cant touch bottom with a 7 rod, and sometimes sayes im in 8 ft and only be in 4 ft

thick vegetation can cause the first problem. the second problem can be caused by extra hard bottom , clay, rock. I have corrected the second reading by reducing the signal strength . what you may be reading echo.

Had a similar problem last year. Restores defaults on both units and problem went away. Hope this helps.
