Having water pressure guage problems on my 2008 Cougar AE with Yahama 225 HDPI. At idle pressure reads below 0 on guage. It takes 1900 RPM before guage moves and at 3800 RPM guage tops out at 10 PSI. All the time motor is spitting water out pee hole. Had dealer check and tested motor in water vat. At idle was reading 15 PSI. Said nothing seemed to be wrong. Took boat back to lake and again no water pressure on guage until 1900 RPM. Called dealer back, suggested checking tubing to guage-all checked out okay. Dealer then suggested new guage. Replaced guage and still same problem. Guage shows no water pressure until rpm reaches 1900 and tops out at ten lbs pressure at 3800-above 3800 begins to drop to around 7 to 8 lbs. of pressure-all the time motor is spittting water and has not given signal that it is running hot. Any suggestion as to what could be problem? Is there a screen or filter prior to water entering pump? Engine has 14 hours on it.
We dont know the minimums on this and are at a loss on Yamaha at idle. Most engines do not produce major WP until 3000 or so RPMs from our experience.
Seen the same issue on a 2005 OX66 200. Buddy took it back to the dealer 3 times. It checks fine with water muffs on it. Even had new pump installed. Come to find out, on the water pickup side on the right hand side looking from the back was plugged with factory blockoff plate. Cannot see it until you remove the grate plate and see that is blocked off. The motor would have decent pressure until turning right and then it would have 0 pressure. If it is this, call the dealer and have a yamaha rep come see it. He ended up with a lifetime warranty on the motor because of it, if he would keep it.
If you have ever operate your boat in cold weather and the line froze that comes from the lower unit to the gauge. This will cause the gauge gear to be push back this will cause the needle not show the correct water pressure. I would say replace the gauge. In a cold area the only thing you can do to stop this is when you come out of the water after fishing, is lower your motor and let the water drain out but if the little hole on the lower unit is stop up then it will not drain and on your dive home the system will freeze up and cause the same problem again.
I have already replaced guage. That has made no difference. Water pressure does not increase with sock on motor. Only time motor showed any pressure at idle was at dealer when he tested motor while intake was submerged in tub of water. Showed about 15 lbs. then. He figured nothing was wrong. But as soon as I returned to lake water pressure was back to 0 and does not increase until I reach about 1900 RPM. After that trip was when the guage was replaced. Next trip to lake last week resulted in same situation-no pressure reading until reaching 1900 rpm and then begins dropping after you go above 3800 rpm.
Go to the Bass Boat Central website and go to the Yamaha Motor forum. There is a lot of information about the poppit valve on the HPDI that could be causing your problem. I have a 2005 HPDI 200 and have never had water pressure at idle and I bought the boat new. At 4500 rpm this past weekend I was showing 13PSI and full throttle I was showing 20 PSI. I have always seen a drop off in water pressure during the summer months. I have recently replaced the impeller and it helped the water pressure reading.
Yamahas dont typically show water pressure at idle. Run the motor. Water is your water pressure at WOT? Is it reading correctly?
I too have had the exact same issue lately. I recently had the lower unit serviced. I thought my PSI was higher and the stream of water more intense. Here is what I was told, PSI will not show until higher RPMs. Expect 15 to 20 at high RPMs. Yamaha works on volume of water. Aint heard that one before but ok. I have had no issues with overheating and everythng seems to be fine.
