I bought a 1992 Caracal 18 ft basscat boat yesterday, Its 19 degrees outside so honestly i hadnt dug all thought it yet. My question is, it has a 12 volt foot controlling trolling motor on it, i think its 40 lbs. I dont think this will be enough so im looking for a 24 volt one. My question is WITHOUT me looking under there. Should the wires be under there for a 24 volt system you think. If not, do you have to run all new wires and is it possible to do. Im sure it wont be easy. I guess my real question is how can i tell if its wired for 12 volt vs 24 volt. Thanks Chris

Chris: I dont know specifically what your 92 Caracal should have as far as trolling motor wiring, but hang on a second and someone will for sure! However, all you need for 24V is sufficient GAUGE wiring running from bow to stern (ie: 8 ga. minimum, and you only need one pair). I would be surprised if it doesnt have at least 8 ga. wiring. All you need to do to go from 12 to 24 volts is install the jumper between two batteries. There only two wires that go to the front all the way up to 36 volt. As mentioned above, you need 6 gauge wire up there and thats probably what is there. Good luck changing out the troller.

Phil or someone please tell me if this is right? Taking the positive lead from one battery to the negative lead of the other battery, then taking the remaining two leads to your troller. This is series wiring and will give you 24 volts. Glynn

I got lazy and emailed the guy i got it from. He said the wires were all still there that the 24 volt one wen tout on him a few year ago and he had the 12 volt one laying around so he put it on. Then he went on to tell me the livewells didnt work and they had something to do with the wiring. SO ill get in there and dig around and see whats going on Thanks Guys for your help, Im sure ill have another question or two

That was my next question. Is there an online scematic somewhere? The dash is faded and i cant see what switch goes to what to figure out what is supposed to work what
