I recently attended a fund raiser at Lake Ozark where Gov. Mike Huckabee was the keynote speaker. He said he had never been to the lake before, but heard it had exceptional fishing. Im not sure many in the audience knew he was an avid fisherman, so the comment probably blew past many. Anyway, after the event, he hung around for the usual pictures, media, etc. He was kind enough to have his picture taken with many of the event sponsors and Im certain answered many questions about his run for the presidency. He seemed very approachable, so after the crowd settled down, I introduced myself. Figuring he had been asked about every political question possible, I decided to take another approach. I told him I had a Puma docked not five minutes from the event and we could easily be on Lake Ozark in fifteen minutes. It was like a calm came over him. No political questions, just good old fish talk. What an interesting, down to earth guy. He loves, and talks fishing. He loved his Jaguar, and now has a Puma. (Although I got the impression he like the Jag better…note to Rick…he still doesnt understand why the Jag was taken out of the line). What an advocate for the outdoors and Bass Cat. Regardless of your political position, it was refreshing to see such a high profile person let his guard down, be himself, and just talk fishing. PS…he didnt take me up on the fishing trip. Said he was tempted but had a flight the next morning at 4:30. He said the next time he was at the lake, you wouldnt find him in a conference room, but somewhere throwing a jig.
cool. unfortunately he had limited funds to run on or he might very well have been the republican choice.
That is nice to hear, too bad more folks across the country didnt have the chance to know a little more about him. He was probably as close to a down to earth person as there was in the race. Even though his name has not been mentioned much lately, it sure would be nice if McCain would suprise us and pick him as a running mate.
We have a personal connection to Mike and we obviously like what he stands for. He is an all around good person. He glided into the Governorship with little favors owed and then was re-elected with a similar lack of political influence. We know he speaks from the cuff, though why not! Hes our kind of people and a person with very strong religious convictions. RickLast edited by Bass Cat Boats on August 27th, 2008, 1:36 am, edited 1 time in total.
I think he would make an excellent running mate for John McCain.
I would have been very proud to vote for Governor Huckabee. He stands for a lot of what is missing in this country. Figures he would run a Basscat.
Have shared a boat with him on several occasions, and always a pleasant experience ! Very sincere, grounded, Christian, and personable friend to the outdoors. I too wish he were the running mate of choice for McCain, but they dont listen to me. If you get the opportunity again,,,,ask him about following me into Coal Pile some years ago !Hell remember,,,,believe me !
Rick. In addition to his love of the Bass Cat, I forgot to mention how highly he spoke of your family. The event happend to be a Pro Life fundraiser, and he definately wasnt afraid to speak frankly about where he stands on the subject and what guides his beliefs. It was very refreshing to hear his candid remarks. Doubtfull that he and I will cross paths again, but it was an interesting night well spent.
I also liked the fact that several times during his term, he took a Bass Cat and toured the Arkansas River from Fort Smith to Dumas. Just meeting folks and talking about things that concerned them. I think his biggest “failing” as a politician is that he says what he really thinks, and stands behind what he says. Not a whole lot of room for honesty in politics these days….. Gov. Huckabee is “regular folks”. He understands what the average Joe faces every day. Hes the kind of guy you would go fishing or hunting with. I remember when he and the first lady moved into a mobile home when the Governors place was being remodeled. It made national news and was a scandalous affair. Most of us average Joes thought it wasnt any big deal. Just showed that our governor wasnt a snob. Id vote for him again if given the chance. Oh, yeah………….of course he would run a Bass Cat……………
Hey Mike, Gov Huckabee took pretty good care of his Jag too. The reason I know is because I now own his old. His name stitched into the seats gets a lot of peoples attention when they come to look over the boat. Seems I have the only Basscat that most people west of Ft. Worth ever see at the tournaments on the west Texas lakes. Johnny
