Bunk mounting options question

Has anyone every used screw inserts which would allow use of a bolt verse lag.Would the inserts be stronger or not as strong as the lags?Would they hold up better or not?Another question would it be recommended to use Stainless Steel or Galvanized hardware, worried about dissimilar metals and making things worse as far as rusting away.Any thoughts or comments?Thanks

It would be more work as the bunks would need to be fitted first, t nuts countersunk, installed, and then your bunks covered. Personally, Id rather have a loose bunk rather than possibly having a piece of steel laying on top of my bunk waiting to gouge my fiberglass boat.

I was not thinking of the t-nuts, I was thinking of something like this – http://www.ezlok.com/inserts-for-wood that still screw in from the bottom. Just wasnt sure if the holding power was good enough or not.

Our position has been mentioned here several times that this is overkill. Usually when you need to replace bunks they are deteriorated and carpeting is tattered. That occurs between 7 and 20 years of age with varying age because of use, weather, storage conditions and just variance in materials. If they have to be replaced and lasted as long as the existing bunk has anyway, we see no reason.

And the Hex installed style is the present system used on seat mounting, thus BCB is well aware of the parts.

We honestly feel that stainless lag screws are better than this mounting option. The inserts your sugesting are zinc alloy and less durable than the stainless lag threads. A complete bolt through with a carriage seated below top of wood level would be better, though it also would in time loosen once the boards degrade and dry rot.
