I have three broken latches now. One on the day storage, one on each rod locker. Are the new latches any better?
Im sure you realize the latches are under warranty. Can be replaced by your Dealer or if its a long trip you can do it yourself. Give BCB parts a call (870-481-5135) and they will accommodate your needs. Yes, to me the new (09) style latches are much better. I to have an 08 model ( Cougar FTD )…… I bit the bullet and spent the money for the new latches. Dont regret a thing. No problems so for. Theyre just so user friendly…. More stylish and durable. If your going to turn a new boat every other year, I wouldnt recomend purchaseing them but if your in for the long haul I wouldnt hesitate! If thats not the right no. Someone please correct me. I agree with Glynn 100%…the one word answer is YES. The new latches are AWESOME. The downside is they arent cheap so make sure you are sitting down when you call Scott or Bobby Lee for prices Judd Lasiter
The new latches are just under $60 a piece. The older latches usually dont just break and we have had a few do that, though not that many and not that many on one boat that we are aware of. Be sure you are turning the latch after the lid is closed and not stepping on the latch twisted into place and not engaged. You need to order new cams from Parts. BCB
Actually the new latch are on sale right now for 45.00 each, I am really thinking of pulling the trigger on a set of them. How long are the christmas sales going to last?
The new 09 Puma Southco Locks will fit right where the Perko Locks were with no problems. I just bought an 08 Puma with 7 Hrs on it and broke a latch first thing. BCB wont replace these Perko Chrome plated latches under warranty with the stainless Southcos.

Higher priced and dont match what came with it. When you open a compartment, if you only turn the latch 90 degrees, the weight of the latch causes it to turn back toward the closed position. Then when you close the compartment lid, if you dont pay close attention. the locking arm hits the edge of the compartment lip and holds the lid partially open. Subsequently when someone steps on the compartment lid, presto, bent or broken latch. The answer is to ALWAYS turn the latch 180 degrees when opening. Easier said than done in getting used to always opening 180 degrees, but it will prevent the problem! Ive learned that lesson the hard way on my 07 Puma! C.
Thanks
This is my fifth bassboat and I am well aware of how to use latches without breaking them. I have never broke one before. I have three broken latches on my 08 Puma right now. My buddy just had 2 latches replaced on his 07 Puma under warranty. I am aware that the latches are under warranty. I am not questioning the integrity of Basscat or the quality of the boat. I am however questioning the quality of the latches. I will probably invest in the new latches but it would be a nice gesture to be able to pay the difference from the old latches to the new. Being a business owner myself I understand the importance of doing the right thing. The quality of the latches does not match the quality of a BassCat. I commend you guys for upgrading to better latches on your new models. However I dont think that those of us who purchased earlier models should have to pay full price to replace substandard parts. The shaft (or cam as you call it) is made of weak pot metal and I can easily break it with my bare hands. To make this clear it is not the handle that is breaking it is the shaft that turns the locking mechanism. I have been extremely pleased with my boat with the exception of the latches.
