Transducer type?

Hello everyone. I have an 89 Pantera II with a 96 black max 200 2.5 XRi. Im wanting to put this humminbird 798ci onto the consol, but wondering what type of transducer would work best; a through hull puck, or a transom mount? I did a search and there were some people saying the through hull puck wont read anything faster than 50-60 mph, and that there was a “y” cable that allowed for the switching between transom and bilge? Does anyone have a part number for this cable?

There is no “switching” of transducers…The y cable splits the signal and will provide your 2d sonar from bilge mounted 2d transducer and will give you your SI/DI and temp from the transom/jack plate mounted transducer. Once you get some air packed under the hull no 2d ducer will read. Depending on how you drive you will lose 2d at 50-ish, some more some less

So should I get this “y” cable and if so is there a part number, or should I should I stick with either a transom mounted or bilge mounted? Which one would be best? This unit will mainly be used for speed/depth/navigation. I plan on getting a separate one for the bow to use for depth/fish Finder.

You need a Y cable, thru hull puck style transducer in 20 degree, separate temp probe shunt style puck for outside temp, side imaging 2D or 3D side imaging transducer. The 800-900 series 3D transducer is a much better transducer than the one you have standard on a 798 and it will work on the 700 units. Theres not much more to add on this other than walking through mounting. Thats all based on your capability. Good luck!

Here is a diagram that explains how the signal gets split with the y cable. A very common installation is to mount your SI transducer on the jackplate (less common on the transom) and the 2d transdcuer in the bilge area as a shoot through and then using the y cable. As BCB mentions, you would then need the puck style transducer XP 9 20 or the XP 9 20 T (which contains the temp probe), and the Y cable ( AS SIDB Y). If your unit is brand new, Humminbird usually offers an exchange on the standard transducer so you can upgrade to the better one it for a reasonable fee.

Hey Catdude. I just installed the evactt setup as your drawing on my 2000 Sabre and it works perfect. Had to mount to transome since I dont have a jackplate but works great- Transom mount for low speed and shoot thru for high speeds. Mine was picking up at 64 gps when I backed off . Got it all from Hummingbird for about $110.00 shipped.
