My Yamaha 175 HPDI tilt/trim meter has slowly drifted up from showing the full down position at the bottom of the meter, to now showing full down at about 60% on the meter. I would like to reset it to show full down at the bottom of the meter. I have Yamaha 200s on my saltwater boat and the meter sensor is a pot mounted on the bar at the bottom forward edge of the motor and has a plastic band (since replaced with a ss pipe strap) and to adjust the meter, you loosen the strap and move the sensor to zero the meter. I have looked at my new motor and so far, I have not located any sensor or adjustment in that area. Since it was right to begin with and has moved up a bar each time I have been on the water, I would assume the sensor is slipping and needs to be tightened, when I find it. Can anyone tell me where to look. I went on Yamahas site, but I did not find where to down load service info. Any help appreciated. Skipjack
Did you check/ask here on the yami board? http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=54
Might need to tighten or replace this item.
Thanks for the picture. I found the sensor under the motor and it looks like its going to be hard to get to. There must be a way to do it and with my grandsons help we will do it. I will try to pick one up in Jacksonville tomorrow. I think this is going to be the Yamahas week spot, because I have had this same problem with my other boat and 200 Yamahas. Maybe we can use a ss pipe clamp on this motor too. It looks like you would put the clamp on from the rear of the mount, but the screw to tighten it is facing forward. Plastic is not a good choice for this sensor. Skipjack
It aint easy to get on there either.I had a friend who heated his to make it more pliable to get on there.Good luck. I agree with your assessment. Judd Lasiter
I replaced mine on a V-Max 200 in about 15 min. Really not that challenging, just gotta trim the motor up/down to get at it from the right angle. Warming it might help with opening it up to replace , especially in these colder months. If I can do it, you can do it!
My grandson and I managed to install a new Yamaha clamp on the tilt/trim sensor. We found one at a local dealer. After we installed it, we could not get the meter to go to the bottom on the read out, at full down position. We must have taken the clamp off 4 or 5 times trying to get more movement in the down position. There is a slight adjustment because the clamp has a tit that fits in a larger round hole and it lets the clamp adjust up or down slightly. The tit has to be in the hole in the steering bar to stay in place. The we noticed in some of the gauge information that there are flip switches on the back of the tack/trim meter that are set for 4 stroke or two stroke motors. We removed the gauge and checked the flip switches and they were at the factory default position, #1 up #2 down #3 up, the set up for a 4 stroke motor. We set all three switches to the down (off) positions for 2 cycle motors. At that point the meter tracked the trim to the bottom and all the way up to the tilt point. Before, I could not tell where the trim was, because it was reading off the meter, before it got to the tilt position. According to the literature on the gauges, the trim/tilt gauge flip switches are set factory default for 4 stroke motors. When they are installed on a 2 cycle engine, the flip switches need to be set for that model motor. Mine was still in the 4 stroke position. If you are having trouble with the Yamaha gauge not tracking you trim correctly, you might want to check the back of the meter to see if the flip switches are in the 4 stroke or the 2 stroke position. There is a round rubber dust cover over the hole that has the switches. You need a small flash light to see the switches and a small miniature screw driver to adjust the switches. The 4 stoke has a two wire sensor in that set up and the 2 stroke has a three wire in its set up. Thanks for the inputs. I got the part number off the picture of the part and that made it easy to tell what we needed. On a web Yamaha parts supplier, the price was listed as $10. I bought two from the local dealer for $5.52 inc tax. Pleasant surprise! We also used a heat gun on the clamp and it did go on better. Thanks again. Skipjack
