Thinking about buying a ram 1500 eco diesel and would like to know pros and cons from those with one. whats the real towing gas millage and pulling power is what Im really looking for. I now have a 2013 F150 5L getting about 10 MPG towing my Puma and hate that. Only need info on Ram. Thx
looking at them now . know of three that friends have ,one two wheel drive ,two four wheel drive. empty 2 wheel 29-31 around town and hwy. towing a skeeter 17-19. 4 wheel is about the same. the longest trip loaded is 7 hours to falcon at 75 mph with 4 wheel drive got 17 mpg pulling a phenix 921 . two of the owners had run chevy with 350 gas and can not be happier . get the 8 speed .
I have a friend that has run every kind of truck imaginable, diesel, gas, turbo boosted, etc. he ran each one a couple of years and pulls a heavy camper. He told me all things considered, maintenance costs, mechanical problems, fuel mileage, towing ability, etc. He currently is running a big liter V8 gas powered and could not be happier. Dan

ThxDanny, you can easily answer your own questions, after all you are the only one that knows what your actual needs and wants are.Fuel savings? Actual cost of gas vs diesel and the estimated mileage of each engine. It is easy math to figure exactly what you will save.Initial cost of gas Ram vs Eco diesel Ram?Maintenance yearly cost of Diesel engine vs gas?Repair bills of a Gas vs Diesel engine unless you plan on trading again before warranty runs out? This can be a big one.Availability of gas or diesel fuel when on the road and more importantly availability of a gas vs diesel mechanic when you are on the road traveling. If you answer those questions it should become clear what you need, want.Dan
Danny,My brother has a Dodge with the small diesel and he really likes it. He is a highly skilled auto mechanic, so I do not think he would buy one with out knowing the vehicle really well. He tows a camper trailer, race car enclosed trailer, a boat, and he uses it to haul customer vehicles on a car trailer. He tells me it gets very good mileage (his last vehicle was a 3/4 Chevy with a big v8). Best of luck in your quest for a new truck!jerry
Thanks for the response guys. I did go on the Dodge board but wanted real numbers towing a boat and trust you guys more then a board, also you dont ask a ranger owner about a bass cat performance.
I had been wondering about real world numbers as well, specifically towing a boat. I will be in the market pretty soon and have always been a Chevy guy. This time around I am either going Aluminum F-150 with an Eco-boost or Ram Eco-Diesel. The Ram mileage, from everything I have heard and read, is astonishing. For a guy that runs 75 miles round trip daily for work, the empty mileage would really add up quick. I have a 2wd Silverado right now and get about 17 empty with it, tack on another 8-12 mpg and that adds up quick. The problem is I really really like aluminum, I design aluminum extrusions for curtainwall systems, it is very much a part of my life blood. Living in Minnesota we deal with a lot of road salts and steel trucks rust out, quickly if they are not washed 3 times a week in the winter. Aluminum is going to win the longevity battle every time up here. I would really love to see a 6 cylinder diesel in the aluminum F-150 or see Dodge start to build aluminum trucks. GM has kinda turned a blind eye to the future of the truck market by not stepping up with a fuel saving full size truck. Would be great to see Toyota do the same with the Tundra. The technology exists to get a solid 30 mpg empty and 20 mpg towing full size truck. Why every manufacturer isnt building them is what confuses me the most.Tom
