02 yamaha 250 ox66???

Im looking at an 02 cougar with a yamaha 250 ox66 on it. Im sure the boat is great but I know very little about the yamaha. Good? Fast? Thirsty?? Any oppinions are helpful. Thanks

Good dependable engine we have found. Runs very well, and it is a little thirsty, though not as thirsty as a 225 EFI Merc. Good – Yes Fast – Yes they can be pretty quick Thirsty – Medium on that range with fuel, and they like oil.

Had a 03 250 OX66. Strong, dependable, very thirsty….got less than 2 m/gallon when running over 5000 rpms. Motor has the O2 sensor which is sensitive to carbon build up. Ran Yamalube and Quicksilver oil and could only get about 150 hrs on a O2 sensor. Not too bad, but the sensors run about $230. All in all, loved the motor…quiet, quiet, quiet…could have a conversation with a partner when running over 60 mph. Only drawback was fuel consumption. Also had issues with the Poppet Valve…cheap fix to the new mushroom style @ $5. Id probably still have mine if gas was still less than $1.50/gal. If you get the rig, dont run DFI oil in it…..O2 sensor doesnt like it. Had a 00 200 carbed Merc before that which burned less fuel. Had buddies who had the 225 OX66 who said theres was much easier on fuel than my 250. Oh, did I mention how thirsty it was?

Heres the thing. To get 250 hp, you are going to have to burn about 25 gallons per hour. Theres no solution to that problem. So the issue becomes at 25 gallons per hour, how fast can you go? On an allison you could probably get close to 100. And 4mpg. If you can only do 75, then you are down to 3mpg. 2mpg seems a bit on the low side however, but who knows?2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

OT57, the newer 250 Pro XS models we have are burning around 20.9 to 21.9 on the top end at upper 70s or better. The Yamaha VZ series seems to burn in the lower 20s to mid 20 range. The older engines were worse, though had dependability as they were not being stingy on fuel and fuel helps lube and cool a 2 stroke. BCB

Ive not run or measured a yammer so have no data. But if a 250 really burns less than 25gph, then that makes his numbers look even worse since he was mentioning 2mpg which seems way low. I know the DFIs use less fuel since they dont blow unburned fuel out the exhaust on the intake / compression parts of the stroke, but as RPM goes up, the old thru-the-crankcase motors got better and better as well since there is less blow by at higher rpm ranges. The old fuel thru the crankcase did have a cooling advantage of course… missing on the DFIs.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
