Home › Forums › Bass Cat Boats › Two Questions 1. How to remove scratches from the dark blue top cap 2. Replacing doomed logo stickers
I have got a few scratches on my top coat and I am trying to get them out. Can anyone tell me the best way to get this accomplished. I am scared to death I am going to dull the finish and not be able to restore it after I use compound. I think dbasketman told me something to get it out once, but cant remember what it is. Any help would be appreciated. The basscat doomed logo stickers are torn on my rig and I need to replace them. How big of a task is this and do I just tear off, wd-40 the adhesive off and replace? Thanks. I put the led lights in the tail section, but havent had time to do the led clearance lights. Look good. Thanks all for the help. -Lee
Dude what did you do? Regardless- get some meguires 3 step. Get some microfiber towels. Put compound 1 on and rub so dang hard the area gets hot. Put 2 on and do it again. I repeat 1 and 2 til my shoulder is killing me or it looks better. Wax in the end. Had the eye of a boat hit my top cap 3 weeks ago. Got it out no problem!C.O.D. Jr. III
It had a few small scratches when I got and a couple of people have stepped on it with muddy flops and caused tiny scratches. It looks great I am just anal. I will give it a whirl. Thanks Ward. Logo stickers a little jacked up when I got it. BBS almost took the small scratches out, but want to go ahead and take care of all of it if possible. http://www.meguiars.com/?boat-rv-kits/F … ion-System Ward, is the link above what you speak of? Did you have to buy and special cloth or anything? Thanks again.Last edited by lreddmann on June 16th, 2008, 4:02 pm, edited 3 times in total.
I just went to wally world and got one of the microfiber cloths from the detailing/car area. Basscat will recommend a better rubbing compound that meguiars?(sp?) but I can get 3 step easier than the Hawkeye they usually recommend. That is not what mine looks like as mine is in a red bottle with numbers on it- same company. That stuff looks better than what I have though. Phil gave me some instruction on this at the GAF last year. I cant imagine being able to rub through the gel coat with a liquid product so I imagine what you have found will be fine if not better. Also- the next time someone with some dirty flip flops scratches the cap stepping in I suggest pushing off from the dock before they get the other leg in. Thats absolutely unacceptable. Period. An apology will cover it but usually someone in dirty flip flops that steps in a boat aint that kind of player. Sorry. Up all weekend- WardLast edited by clownshoes on June 16th, 2008, 6:33 pm, edited 1 time in total.C.O.D. Jr. III
It was the fiance and we had a talk yesterday when I was washing and saw the damage. It wont happen again. I wouldnt recommend your course of action with her, b/c I may get left at the lake! Thanks Ward. -Lee
I had heard about this method somewhere- dont remember- but it worked well for me. I found a crayon with a matching color and used it to fill the scratch area. I then used a rag to remove the crayon wax from around the scratch. I then waxed the area using Mequiers Flagship and it worked really well. It was a scratch that was very easy to see before and now I have a hard time seeing it. Cheap, easy, wont hurt anything. I too was leary of using hi-speed buffers, etc.
Thank you Basscatman.
Ward I found me a battery powered buffer/polisher that has a wheel about 3″ in diameter. Works great for small, hard to get to areas and takes some of the elbow grease out of the job. As Ward pointed out, you would have to be an almost idiot to go all the way through. Heck, you can sand for a while with 1000 grit wet sand paper and not go through. Any fine grit compound will do the job for the scratches you speak of. May be marked on the bottle as scratch remover, swirl remover, etc. The key is to rub hard enough to create heat as Ward pointed out. If you create heat, youre cutting the scratch. If not, youre probably wasting compound and your time. the next best thing is to tell whoever to keep their feet on the dock or on the carpet! Good luck with your project!
One more quick question and then I will let this post die. After I put the rubbing compound on and rub the crap out of it, what should I use to restore the polish. What scares me is once I use the compound, I wont be able to restore the shine. Thanks PA. -LeeLast edited by lreddmann on June 17th, 2008, 2:02 pm, edited 1 time in total.
