Selling a Basscat out of the US to Canada

Has anyone ever privately sold a boat to a Canadian citizen? I have a gent from Canada interested in buying my 03 Cougar and Im struggling with how we both can be financially protected through this transaction. Weve discussed cash, wire transfers, Paypal type apps to transfer money internationally, etc. My concern is, in addition to both parties being protected, the limits put in place by the Patriot Act in the US.Any input would be appreciated.H.S.

There may be some trailer certification required and otherwise we would go through a registered agent.

Ive sold two into Canada. Money was wired. I provided a bill of sale and he paid what he needed when he crossed border.

I have sold 5 or 6 of mine to people from Canada and delivered 2 others (1 new from a dealer and 1 used from another owner) and have had almost no problems. All the ducks have to be in a row. The Canadian purchaser just has to be prepared to spend a little time at customs. Bill of Sale should show each item Boat, Motor and Trailer separately. And Titles (at least from here in Missouri) from each item must accompany sale. Funds are always in $US. My Canadian friends would be glad to talk you through it.

Have Canadian buyer collect all correspondence from for sale article to discussions then bill of sale for boat motor and trailer.At the boarder buyer will pay 10% tax. Buyer needs to keep that document for years as revenue agency will question wether or not tax was paid. When back home buyer will need to get vessel registration number if that was not done at boarder and will have trailer inspected to get licensing and registration.Then contact Bass Cat to transfer the warranty and Quest registration. Been there done that. It was surprisingly easy.

Phil has it right. The Canadian needs to have titles for all three items, Hull, Trailer and Motor. A bill of sale for the boat and motor and a separate bill of sale for the trailer as it is considered importing a vehicle. US Bank draft works well for payment as does a wire transfer. Depending on the province they live in, They will have to pay tax on the hull and motor value (13% in Ontario) and 5% on the trailer value plus get a New Vehicle Information Survey application started. The they will pay the remaining 8% on the trailer when they pate it with the MTO.They will NOT let the boat into the country if the titles are not with it!

How is the title addressed if titles for the boat and motor do not have Kansas titles?
