I have a new Caracal with a SHO and a T25 prop, Took it to the Big O to run it. Temp 80, light wind. Boat ran 68.5 @ 5500 top end, adjusted up and down on Atlas JP. That was max speed. I read a Yamaha performance test done summer of 2017, temp 95, water 85 using a T24, results 72.5 @ 5950. Why is BCB sending the rigs with 25s instead of 24s. Should you have 1 of both sizes? Have other caracal owners experienced the same results ? I have read some on this forum that are having the same issue.
Ive been seeing alot of guys getting new boats (various brands) with too large of a pitched prop. Resulting in lower rpms at wot. As for the sho/caracal I cant comment. Mines a 16 with a 225 pro xs. 33/10 tanks. Single power pole and 36v trolling motor. Mine came with a 25p fury 3 blade. The best I ran it was 73@5400 rpm. Ended up swapping to a 24p fury 4 blade. Now pushing 70@ 5750 rpm. Mean while I have several friends that went with a 25p-4 blade and are running very similar rpm, and a few mph more. Both of their boats do not have the atlas jp. Not sure if it causes some drag? I recently had a post on the bass cat owners face book page. Jim Tate is running a caracal/sho. And hes running a old school temptest 25p, said hes pushing 76.9 around 5800 rpm. Manual jp.Should be easy to sell your prop and find another on here or on bbc boards.
I had a 2015 with the sho. I hit 70 at about 5800 with the T25 and probably could have gotten a few more but was still learning and a little chine had me backing off. This was with lots of gear, about 45 gals of fuel and 2 passengers. Switched to a 23p razor 4 blade and had it up to 70 alone with full load at 5700 or so. I don’t push for speed often as the water I fish is seldom calm.My PTP was 3.25
BCB sends them with propeller the dealership orders.
From what I seen is that the first thing that is asked is how fast….what is the top speed…. not how does it handle… or what is the holeshot like when she is fully loaded. If I was interested in speed Id look at a 25p 3blade T-1 prop if I want handling and holeshot Ill look into a 22p 4 blade T-1 prop for the SHO.
To chime in, which is seldom, altitude should have a lot to do with performance as well. I live basically on Lake Mead and the prop here differs in performance on Lake Powell (slower) and again the Cal Delta (faster by 5mph at the least). Love speed for sure but on big water and slot car racing Delta handling a must….99 Jag, 225 HPDI II, 3 blade 25 Fury….. 74 at the Delta, 69 Mead, 65ish Powell. Time of year another factor in speed……
I have the SHO on my Caracal running a 24p T1 and I usually run 58-5900 and 71-72 mph.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
lamoon78, Thanks that is the performance that I saw in Yamahas test. it is what I am looking for. My dealer is working on the issue with BCB. I have a spare 25 in the box that was the spare for my 15 P2. The rig just does not have mid range or top end with the 25. Thanks again
That combo should run into the 70s depending on your load and how you distribute the weight. You are also dealing with sea level pressure which will run a bit differently than up here in the North. My boat had the 25 Ventless SHO prop and the trick was to set the jackplate at 9 or 10 on hole shot and as soon as the boat crested, drop it down to 3. Keep in mind that I kept the heavy items (lead and plastics) in the 2 back compartments, hard baits, safety gear and rods in the front deck storage areas. I had 85 gallons of fuel, (33 under the seat, 2-26 in the rear) and could run 72-74 with two guys full of gear. Full Live wells would cost you about 1 mph. You can easily over trim the Caracal and also run it too high on the plate as it will shovel air if not given the chance to build speed before trimming. It would actually lose speed or stop climbing if you over trimmed it. Bring the nose back down a few bumps of the trim and see if it starts to climb again. Like mentioned, steering torque should only be slightly present when trimmed out and running hard.Hope this helps
JP I am up North in PA, Ran the rig Sat and Sun, Hyd jackplate set @ 6, still a Toad with the 25, less than 1/2 tank fuel, maybe 20 gal. Best 68 @ 5500 and took a long time to get there. Not my first time at the rodeo, had 2 Gamblers, a P2, rangers etc. The dealer thinks that the 25 is the way to go, but Yamaha tested with a 24 and had respectable numbers 72.5.Mid range is horrible and this bothers me more than anything, holeshot is OK. But I will try running the plate at 3 and see how that goes. Thanks
