motor guide question

In reading Ricks post of electric history I had an old question. Rick talked of putting 36v to a 24v motor and I had heard of some guys doing that but it was never while I saw it.So here are my questions.How long did the motors last? Are there any differences in MG motors from 24v 82lbs versions to 36v 109 lbs versions aside from the voltage supplied. In other words are we paying more for a sticker?Can we make a 109 out of an 82 by putting 36v to the wires? Will it last? Has anyone tried this on a newer MG. The motors seem to use the same props , are the same diameter and length. Is the only difference the RPM provided by 36 volts?Irv

It shortens the motor life if you push them.

My TR82 is a 36v so I dont think you are on the right track.Johnny

The motors are longer on those labeled for 36 volts to handle the voltage. If you do not push one hard often then you certainly could run a 24 on 36 and regulate using the faster speeds to lengthen life. It is cheaper to do this and worry about a possible repair than to bump up to a 36 volt motor which still yet may require a repair anyway. Your playing with the odds it might work and if you use it to simply fish then it probably will work fine on 36 volts.

I think the main advantage of a 36 volt motor vs a 24 volt is battery life. Remember, the higher the voltage, the lower the amps.

Most were labeled 24/36 from older trollers. The decision is yours knowing you may have to spend a few bucks, though you may have had that issue either way.

On the Digital 24 and 36V trolling motors (both Minnkota and Motorguide) the brushcards/brushes, control boards/modules, and wiring is the same. difference is length of armature and motor housing. This is to accommodate the extra voltage and allow the motor to continue to run “cool” as electronics need to. Thanks so much I just may try this as it would just be fun to screw with turning my old tour 80 into a rat rod. Good to know not to worry about anything except the actual electric motor and as you said that can be replaced.Irv
