Jumping Cranking Battery Question ????

I have my trolling motor batteries wired in series(2 batteries) to make it 36 volt with a jumper cable that is connected to pos on one batt & neg on the other batt. My question is when I have to jump my cranking battery because its run down from using it all day, what two posts do I need to connect my jumper wires to on the trolling battery/batteries. Do I hook it up to only one batt or do I have to hook it up to both. Does this make sense what Im asking ????

You have to take the wires off the crank batt. and the wires off the batt. you want to jump off of, or they will arc from hooking a pos to a neg.

Maybe I am missing something, but I believe you described running two batteries for 24 volts. If in fact you are running a 24 volt trolling motor, and you need to jump your cranking battery, jump from the positive on one battery to positive of the cranking battery, and the negative of the same battery to the negative on the cranking battery. If you in fact have three batteries tied together for 36 volts, I would follow harleycats advice.

I always disconnect one of the trolling batteries completely…no cables or jumpers connected… and then run the jumper cables to the crankin battery off the trollin battery that is completely disconnected.

I knew this was going to sound “STUPID”. On my trolling batteries, ( I have 2 batteries) the guy before me had or did it himself, put a white jumper battery cable that connects the two. I have not seen this hook up before, so when I put the new batteries in I went back with the same hook up. Does the cable being connected to both batts then make it a 24 volt. I quess the answer to my question would be to disconnect the white cable from both batts and then hook then jumper cables to one of the batt as normal. Anybody disagee ?

EARP64, your going to need and get a diagram for that year model as there are multiple different set ups over the decades. We dont like confusing the masses with one wire combination they may not have.

Be very careful while you have your wires disconnected. A person in our club dropped a wire while he was jumping his off and it wasnt pretty. After seeing things like this Im so glad I spent the extra $$$ and had the 4th battery put in. http://www.texaspoormans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6609

Question is why are you having to jump the cranking battery in the first place ??? I ran a small group 24 Trojan cranking battery for over 3 years with no issues until recently. I didnt even check the water level, I just replaced it with a group 27 and I never heard the engine crank over this fast. Are you drawing the battery down completely, how long until that occurs ?? You shouldnt have to jump start your engine if you got a good battery back there, unless maybe you are running two 10 inch screen Fish finders and all accessories… Or perhaps you are just making sure you know how to jump start it correctly, if you ever run into this issue.
