I ve done a search on forum archives and have not come up with anything on repair process. Looking for a bit of help ! A chip happened over the winter in storage. I need to repair it. The depth has exposed the silver bolt color under the red with flake. What is the process to repair. Im assuming I have to use a red gel to get base color then clear with matching flake. Any direction for the fix would be appreciated. This is on the inside gunwale edgeBob
I assume the fix is the same w/ all makes of boats. 1–order the gel2–order the flake3–mix until consistency looks close4–tape for any over exposure5–let set up6–sand w/ very fine grit 2000 or 2500 wet (I would guess)7–buff fine scratches outI dont think I missed a step but maybe so.
^^^ This ^^^. If you were fixing black, white, or another solid ( non-flake) gel – you can do it yourself easily. With flake, getting the right blend will be extremely difficult. It needs to go to a pro if correct blend matters to you.
I talked to someone who had a pro do a repair on new boat. He actually placed individual flake into the gel to get it just right. No way Id have the patience for that so Id let pro handle any area with flake. Ive done repairs of gel on the black bottom of boat with Wards guidance and that wasnt bad. You still need to be patient and go slow with layers. But it wasnt difficult though very time consuming. Good luck.
Small areas probably not to bad. But it takes TALENT to get good flake matches. Ive seen this done on several occasions thru my yrs. Its definitly not as easy as it looks2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Last time I saw it done by a very experienced pro, he gently blew the flake into the wet gel from the palm of his hand until he had the right density. Cool to watch but not sure what you do if you sneeze at the wrong time!
