Lower Unit Gear Lube

Anyone running Royal Purple or Amsoil Lower unit lube over OEM and do you see any positives

I personally would not run the Royal Purple. Royal Purple is a type 3 synthetic which is a highly refined conventional oil. AMSOIL is a type 4 100% synthetic oil. AMSOIL products are very high quality and I would not hesitate to use their products in any situation. I have done a ton of research on synthetic lubricants in general to find the advantages over the cheaper conventional oils (to include the type 3 synthetics). There are very few oil companies out there that provide a true 100% type 4 synthetic oil due to the cost of production. Do your home work and you will find the same answeres I have. pops77s Thanks for the input, I have been trying to do some research on it but havent gotten to your level and appreciate your information.. I started looking into it because of a few threads stated a gain in RPM from using either of them .. over OEM Mercury Lube but it didnt state if it was the High Performance Mercury Lube.

To each his own I guess. I prefer to use Mercury OEM stuff in my engine. Just had Sherm change my lower unit oil. He uses Mercury High Performance Gear lube.

Its really hard to beat Merc High Performance gear lube.

The Mercury High Performance gear lube has added extreme pressure synthetic additives in it to protect gears from metal to metal contact. It is not 100% synthetic. Not to say it isnt a good lube because I think it is a very good lubricant. Do I think it is the best on the market, far from it, but it is good enough to satisfy Mercury Marines warrantee. POPS77S No not silly you, I didnt mention Mercury Lube or Mercury High Performance Gear Lube in my first note just OEM and had read that using either RP or Amsoil may increase Engine RPM by as much as 1 to 200RPM along with a higher Extreme Pressure wear assurance (less wear factor). I keep trying to find info on this and it keeps coming up better than conventional oils, no direct comparison between Royal Purple, Amsoil, or Semi Synthetic.. One thing is for sure there is Mercury Lube and there is Mercury Hight Performance Lube > Merucy had made and went to the HP Semi Synthetic for reason over the old lubeI have more to digest but Amsoil is 100% synthetic with a very high EP rating

The late BWB magazine put out a lower unit gear lube test a few years back but I cant find it anywhere to post it. Searching the net you can find enough information on it to find the outcome of the top performers in their lab testing. Good luck in your quest for the information you are looking for.
