Ford Mechanics?

Just wondering if there are any active Ford Mechanics in the house, that would be familiar with the Fuel System on a 2003 Expedition 5.4L motor?James

First off, sorry to hear you own a ford. On a more serious note, Im a ford mechanic. They dont have me do driveabilty, but whats the issue ?2005 Sabre, 150 XR6, Minn Kota Fortrex with Lowrance electronics

When you crank it, it will not crank right away as it used to. It takes 2 turns of the ignition. The battery and starter are fine. It seems like that it is getting no fuel for the first few seconds of the key being on or turned. The fuel gauge takes about 5-6 seconds to power up and then the engine will crank. It doesnt matter if it is off for a while, or if you turn it off and then try to crank it again. It will turn over and over but will not fire until the fuel gauge powers up. Once the engine is cranked, no problems. Runs, idles, accelerates fine. Do you think the fuel pump is going bad? Is the pump supposed to hold pressure to the engine while its powered off? Is there some sort of check valve or pressure regulator that could be causing the problem? Thank You for your time!James

Just a few bits of info: It has about 143,000 miles. At 100,000 miles I had the dealer do a FI & TB clean and new spark plugs installed. Rear Diff, Tranny, Cooling System flushed and filters where required, including the fuel filter. The fuel filter was replaced every 25-30,000 miles, along with the serpentine belt and both were replaced at 132,000 miles. There is no engine light on either.James

Go to the Ford Trucks web site and then to the Expediton site and ask there. There are a lot of knowing people there.

I think your heading in the right direction with the fuel pump… If possible have some one turn the key to the on position while you are under the suv listening at the fuel tank… You should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on and start pumping fuel right away…Im not sure where the pump is located weather its in the tank or on top of the tank. That is a question for a ford wrench…But if you know the battery is good as well as the starter, I would look at the fuel pump next…You may have to take it in and have them hook the computer up to it, they should be able to give you an answer…Good luck

Fuel pump most likely but you will need to check fuel pressure to be sure. Specs on the 5.4 is 55 psi (key on engine off) and 55 psi (engine running.) You can also use it to see if pump is bleeding down when it sits.

You may also want to check the Coil on Plugs which are on each spark plug. If these get any moisture on them, they will cause hard starting and the truck will run and idle rough.

could be the fuel pump Modulator……I just had one replaced on my F150..Take it to the dealer and let him check the codes…
