New to Bass Cat, I purchased a 2014 Margay, has a Mercury 150 XR6 & 6″ jackplate. I need Help with recommended setup for this boat. Today I ran this boat for the 1st time, and I was surprised how much this boat plowed the water. I did have this boat to 60mph (gps). Running a 25″ Tempest prop, it jumps out of the hole, mid range it plows, higher speed it keeps lifting and going faster. So whats the recommended Prop shaft to Boat running pad measurements?
Not knowing how much you have driven a bass rig, you did trim it up. Also do you know the engine height?
Im 61, been running boats 40 years. Yes it was trimmed all the way up. My measurements is 2.75″ And it tried to chine walk alot
Also what Prop. Will a 4 blade help?
I am sure others will be here to help soon. I have been told that BassCats are very different to drive from other bass boats, and they do not require as much trim. Below is an article on how to drive the BassCat hulls that has been well received. http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/218 … ExperienceGood Luck, and congratulations on your new BassCat.
In the old days just about every boat I owned chined walked. Its been a while, but I got it to stay up on running pad to get the boat to 60mph. But Thanks very much for the article, its very helpful in remembering what to do. I do feel I had the boat trimmed to high. I also feel that a 4 blade prop will take some of the torque away, to give a more “even” ride thru the mph range.
If you have steering wheel torque then the engine is too high. Margay models do have a shorter transom and require more height and they can get too high. Running full out steering wheel torque should just be a soft pull Right requiring Left pressure on the steering wheel. Excess engine height would also not allow the propeller to hook up at mid range. So would a lot of nose weight Please visit your dealership and see if they can help. If they are not familiar with a Margay then have them contact BCB. The factory is closing after tomorrow and communication will be out till July 9th we believe.
Lawnman , my experience has been that the 3 blade produces more bow lift , as compared to whole boat lift with the 4 blade . — I personally like the 4 blade for carrying a load , which I do just by putting my big self in the boat . — Keep tweaking on it , and youll get it eventually where you want it . — I would think mid 60s is quite do-able with the Margay / 150 combination . — Hoss
Im running the 24p fury at 3″ below pad. I weigh 230 and with 3/4-full tank im seiing between 68.5-69.5 at 5700. I have seen 70-71 at 5800 low on fuel. The boat is extremely weight sensitive. Add a 230 lb partner and im at 64ish at 5550, fill the livewells with a partner and im struggling to hit 60 around 5400. It cant get its rpms up with the fury under a heavy load. Perfect prop if you like to fish by yourself most of the time. Search 2014 basscat margay on youtube, I put a little clip on there a while back that i took with my phone, I think i was running 69 or so heavy on fuel. Engine height makes a big difference on the Margay. Keep playing around with it and youll find the sweet spot. I have run 20 footers for years and this boat is unique. There is only one thing that will fix the chine walk and that is time behind the wheel. It doesnt matter how much experience you have running boats, this ones got an attitude different from any other ive seen. It will plow water. Trim up a little at a time and add power until it gets on its pad. After enough seat time you wont even haveto think about it.
Today, I fished all day, Put my 1st limit in the new boat, 13lbs, still a limit & caught by 11:42am. Having said that, with a full livewell, I very little bow lift at all, and she would turn only 4200 rpms. Im beginning to think the 25″ Tempest is to much prop for this boat. My Mercury is an 2004 150 XR6, and I had it on a Ranger 361. It would turn 5600rpms and run 62.3mph.I would think the Margay should be comparable to the 25 year Ranger, being the Ranger was a bit heavier. I did lower my engine down 1/2″ yesterday. Are the Margays that weight sensitive?
