I have a new to me 2004 225 Optimax that has the low water pick up in the nose cone. My last Optimax ran at over 20psi. This engine wont get over 10. The thermostats and poppet valves have been checked out. The impellor was just changed. My mechanic called Mercury and they suggested that before he looks anywhere else I should cover the top few holes in the lower unit or lower the engine. The engine isnt all that high now to begin with. Anyone else have this problem? How was it diagnosed and how was it resolved. Thanks.

Have you tried a other gauge, have you hook the computer to the engine and checked wp through the smart craft systems, have you gotten a hot horn . min wp is 10 psi @ 5000 rpm max 25 psi need to do alittle more testing.

Frank, We think if the impeller has been checked and the Impeller housing, as well as supply line to the block, it must be a faulty sender or gauge. The 04 Opti has the ability for either analog or digital readings. Is your gauge Smart Craft or old fashioned Analog? If it is Analog, we suspect the gauge and your mechanic can hook their DDT to the engine with a tag line and monitor the WP while you are running. That is simple, and if he has a laptop, and understands the software, he can read the actual digital pressures that were listed without going to the lake. It sounds like a little has been assumed trying to verify your case instead of researched. Give your “wrench” a bit of time and some suggestions. He probably has not dug into it yet, though maybe should have from the get go. Merc. wont give him time unless he diagnosis a problem and it sounds like that is where he needs to go. BCB

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have both gauges. The digital readout on the Smartcraft was the same as the readout on the analog Smartlink gauge.

Those are activated by the same sender, thus we suspect a faulty sender. The optional gauge in that is not analog.
