I was just reading an article about fishing for deep smallies and it reminded me of a conversation I had at a Federation tournament last year. We were fishing for smallies in 25 of water and a fellow co angler had caught a 4 or 5 pounder right next to us in the same depth. Although the boater that I was with had caught a couple and I as well had no fish die on us, the big girl caught on the other boat did. This brought up the question should they have “popped the air blatter” on the fish because of depth? Neither one of us were sure not only how do you do this but at what depth should you be concerned about doing so? I have seen anglers do this on TV but never really saw what exactly they are doing and at what depth they are doing it in. I really hate to see a tournament fish die like that and would like to be a more responsible angler. If anybody could help Id sure appreciate it and will make sure I pass it on to my fellow anglers.
Most state agencies support it for fish altho putting fish beneath basket and lowerinf them to caught depth is better. I carry 5cc syringes with 20 gauge needles for this. Will find you directions shortly. Can go thru mouth or from side of fish using lateral line, dorsal fin and #%#% to line the shot up.I cant say %%$%? Dude im a doctor? Lmao!!! Here goes again- Anal Vent Ok so +*%# is bad and anal is fine. Hilarious.Last edited by clownshoes on January 24th, 2012, 7:05 pm, edited 3 times in total.C.O.D. Jr. III

An issue I have with using A-Rig for deep suspenders in tourneys. Guess it would be same w/ any deep fishing – but A-Rig makes it easier to catchem deep. Most dont know to “fizz” the fish and after a couple of hours in the livewells theyre getting the belly up bends. After the tourney, if theyre fizzed, is the mortality elevated? Are we gonna lose more tourney quality fish due to angler error or ignorance in the winter and heat of the summer?
Fished the BFL circuit in Texas and was told that as a Tournament they could not fizz any fish. So my rule of thumb is that if the fish is sideways in my livewell from any depth of water is to bleed the air out of them. I have also found fish floating on the lake and picked them up and bled the air out and they would go straight down.Taking care of my resource….GeorgeGeorge
Mojo would know better than me but i dont know that delayed fizzing within usual tourn hours is associated with higher mortality. Surprised and a little bugged by TD in a large bfl event not doing it. Pretty sure tpwd has issued stance for it being done? as for arig concerns- most of those fish suspended and dont seem to be so bad. Football jig derby at degray in january when they r snapping in 30+ is far worse. Fish were floating everywhwere. Fizzed 10? Or so one day when burnett and i showed up for a suggs, shuffield, shuffield, green, kindy, et al, beatdown.Last edited by clownshoes on January 25th, 2012, 2:39 am, edited 1 time in total.C.O.D. Thanks for the info! I always thought it was just a depth issue, had no idea other factors. Now I know what to look for. This is something that should be put out there a lot more.
Was told by a BFL director that we are not to fizz the fish. That in their studies on fizzing the fish, is that they sink to the bottom afterwards and not able to move. They lower the fish under a weighted laundry basket until the bubbles release and the fish swim off on their on.
How do they know when they release unless fish kept in tanks assigned by depth?C.O.D. Jr. III
to fizz just means the dead fish dont float to the surface
