Im back in the tourny fishing, it sure feels good!!! First tourny finished fourth (2 weekends ago), than this past weekend I won it…Fishing is tough in WV…Only had three fish a little over 10lbs…But is was good enough to win…But I have my first night tourny coming up this weekend. 5pm to 12(midnight) Ill have 4 good hours of daylight but the last three hours is what has me a little nervous. I never have done to good at night any help or suggestion? I have been to alot of reading on night fishing. Seems like alot of folks throw a black spinner, I guess that is what I will fall back to…If any of yall fish at night and would be willing to throw me some tips I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance for any tips! Thanks, Steve
I fish several night tournaments on Grand this time of year. I prefer a night tournament because of the peacefulness. I use exacty the same baits at night I use during the day. I normally throw a darker worm but have caught several fish on a green pumpkin worm at night. Berkley blue fleck power baits in the 5 and 6 work great here also a 10″ worm works great. Black spinner baits around docks are good and shallow crank baits. Those fish are still feeding like they do during the day and they seem to find the same color worms at night as during the day. Making a ton of noise with a bait is still not always the key.. A soft presentation around structure is still what gets them going. There is less boat noise and such on the water at night so the fish can key in on baits easier I believe.
Sounds good, So you dont use rattles on spinners and worms…??…Im excited about it, not having to fight the ski boats and wave runners and their wake… I think well have 25 to 30 boats…That is what I was leaning too, I was already getting things (spinners/crank/worms) together and ready for Saturday night…Cant wait! Thanks for the tips! Steve
Some guys might add the rattles and such but I have found that if I fish the same bait the same way at night as during the day it works the same. I have also found my bigger fish in the darker pockets as opossed to the docks with lights. You can catch more on the docks with lights but the bigger ones seem to just stay next to the place they feed at during the day. Carolina rigs also work good on points and sandy flats at night. A perch or crawdad does not have a built in rattle to swim at night and they get eaten all night long so I look at my bait the same way. No extra noise. I just use a little darker baits so when it hits the water the bass can look up and see it better. But this is just my prefernece when night fishing.
Thanks for your advice, we dont have any docks just the two marinas on either end of the lake, but there are points and flats that is where I get most of the fish during the day. So it sounds like Ill be sticking with them at night as well as a few other spots in the middle of the lake Couple nice rock structures, they are hard to fish during the day due to ski boat activitys… Thanks for the pointers Bigbass! Steve
Let me know how you do
Will do….
I use 17 – 20 lbs test. My favorite, is a scum frog (or any plastic topwater with hidden hooks). Does not snag when you throw it to far. Black Wait till you feel the pull Night feeders are dumber or let their guard down in my opinion. Best when full moon so you can see and navigate better and fish are looking up.
Steve, Apparently your in WV, which means a mountain reservoir. The reservoirs will fish with worms and top waters depending till dark, then move over to Texas rigged plastics and jigs, or you can switch to a single spin with Colorado blade in the 5 or 6 variety. After dark old road beds, brush piles and such tend to hold more fish by far. Not really a bank type though a structure approach after dark is usually best. BCB
Yes in WV…We have mountain reservoir, normally pretty clear, So far this year they have been stained and about 2 foot higher than normal pool. We do have grass that grows from the bottom (some bladed grass, and the other I call cabbage grass-grows to the top and clops up) Hopefully with this warm weather and sunny days we are having this week the grass will make it to the surface… swanson – I was thinking frog if the grass has grown on up closer to the surface…I was reading about the moon phase and fishing. Somewhere it said a full moon and a new moon…I could understand the full moon due to light help both fish and us see, I guess with the new moon it deals more with the gravitational pull…?… I have dug out the bigger plastics 10″ worms Im planning on using…I still have to get a few jigs together with trailers…I am planning on working those rock structures in the middle of the lake after dark…low ski boat wake, and hopefully not to many people will see me out there
