I drove from Maryland to Alabama and somewhere along the road I passed some road work and covered my truck, boat, trailer, and boat cover with tar. How can I get any of this clean without hurting the clear coat. How could I clean the cover. I mean it is EVERYWHERE! I need to get er cleaned up. Any advice???

There are products that assist this, and diesel fuel also may work. Some use gasoline laced with some oil also. Though gasoline is highly flammable. The cover is tough as anything you soak it in will abuse the coating or finish of fabric, so we would try a power washer and time on that one.

Acetone is a good product to clean areas of gelcoat. I personally first would try the turtle wax or rain x bug and tar remover that you spray on the areas, let it set then pressure wash off. It works best on my cars and have used it on the boat as well.

WD40 on gel, steel, and paint surfaces, the cover is as BCB stated, time and powerwasher. Not much you can do with it…..

Probably the safest thing to use on you truck paint is to go to the automotive paint suppliers in your area and get a gallon of wax and grease remover. It will take the tar off truck, boat and trailer i dont know if i would use it on the cover are not it still is a petroleum ditillate. This stuff wont hurt the paint on you truck or gel on the boat. Dries slower than acetone so you have more work time.

For all but the cover – WD 40 and elbow grease. Bug and tar removal can work too. No matter what you use you are looking at hours of rubbing Im afraid. My wife insists on white cars and can find wet tar in a gravel pit in January. I speak from experience….

Bass Boat Saver will take tar off of your gel coat. Probably would work in the cover too, but not sure about that. And it wont damage either one.

I would try detailers clay on your boat and truck. If that does not work, youll need to use some sort of solvent. Some of the big car parts stores carry a product made by Stoner Solutions its called Tarminator. This works extremely well. Just spray it on, let it dwell for a few minutes, you should start to see the tar starting to run, then wipe off. It may take several applications. Ive detailed cars that are covered in tar, its a slow long process.

IVE ALWAYS USED GAS TO GET THE TAR OFF,,,BE SURE YOU PUT A GOOD WAX ON AFTERYOU GET THE MESS OFF……..GOOD LUCK….EVERYONE NEEDS A WORM THO

I had a customer who worked in a road paving crew and always had to get tar off of things. He used a large can of GO JO WITHOUT the pumas in it. It worked like a charm. It may even work on the cover too. Might want to try it in a corner first.Godspeed
