I placed a call to parts today and missed their return call this afternoon. My P4 is almost 2 years old, and have just recently starting having the tach show erroneous readings, this happens anywhere from 4000-5800 rpm. GPS will read 45 MPH and Tach will show 6200 rpms and will vary depending on speed. The engine is running great and do not believe there is any problem there. I have checked all the connections on the gauge and they are tight, though when running down river I can “slap/hit” the gauge and get the needle to show the correct reading. It does not do this all the time but enough to be annoying, so my question is would this be something that is covered under a warranty claim (2 years i believe) or will i need to purchase a new tach? I will call parts again tomorrow, but just wanted to see what i might be in for $ wise. It is not the smartcraft gauge just the regualr needle gauge, that i can change out myself, dont really want to bring it to the dealer, for something so simple. Thanks Jason

Jason, The voltage is what we need to determine in order to verify if it is the tach or a voltage regulator. It should max at 14.2 and if you are reading over the 14+ mark then it would be our thoughts it is the regulator or stator.

I can verify the voltage a little later today, I am just trying to figure out though if it is a voltage issue why would tapping/knocking on the gauge when running cause the rpm to fall back into the normal range? I would tend to believe if it was a voltage issue the gauge would be more erratic, not maintain a constant even though the wrong rpm is indicated, until the unit is tapped on? And i am assuminmg you want a direct DC reading off the back of the gauge and not what the voltmeter is showing correct?Last edited by JSLAW on May 29th, 2008, 5:22 pm, edited 1 time in total.

OK just got back in from checking, the VDC at the back of the gauge with engine at idle and showing 700 rpms a few, was 13.9-14.02, the voltmeter on the boat was reading right around 13.5 , i will give parts a call and see what they can come up with. Thanks for the quick reply. Jason

I talked with scott today and after telling him the story he tended to belive it was a guage issue. I will get ahold of my local dealer and try to arrange for a new gauge this week. Scott was saying this is a mercury gauge and will be covered under a warranty claim.
