Im just curious if anyone has had any experience with the Suzuki 250?
Ran one again today! There are not many out yet, and none other than the few we are aware of on Bass Cat models. BCB
I know of a few that are running around sw mo. on chargers. One of the guys I know very well and he is in love with it.
BCB, I read the BWB article with the Puma and 250 Zuki and the performance seemed to be pretty close to that of the 250 two strokes. Was that accurate as far as the performance you are seeing as well or is the difference actually a little more noticable. The only 4 stroke experience I have is on Bay Boats so I cant really compare, though, on the bay boats Ive been in I was very impressed with overall performance of the 4 bangers. Most notably the quietness of the motors. It is a joy to be able to hold a conversation at full pedal. Especially when your used to a traditional two stroke with a tuner and cowling mods. I must be getting older now, that racket used to sound cool to me and now Im getting tired of it in my Boat and Truck. Maybe Im not getting older, just wiser. We are reserving judgement for more time on speeds. The engine is very smooth and runs well though we have not moved to offer the engines yet. It will take time for all of you as anglers to accept the 4 stroke Suzuki and a market to develop. The dealer network is strong on saltwater and coastal markets, though limited on inland waters. Things like this take time and Suzuki must build the market and has tough decisions in order to navigate into the Bass markets.
What about the Yamaha 225 Sport 4 stroke? 20″ shaft and variable camshaft timing. Looks like it would have a ton of torque and be a good fit for a Bass Boat.
We have driven that as well. It is a very sweet engine, though it is not quick and from our experience gives about 9-10 mph to the Suzuki or Mercury engines in 250. The 225 Verado is 4-6 up on it as well. For bass fishing speed is an issue or we would all just go down 50 ponies or so on our rigs.
I had the privilege to run one last year and I was very impressed. The holeshot wasnt quite what the 2 strokes provide but my understanding was that could be fixed with a different prop. It was quite, smooth and had a KILLER gauge package. It was one of the most stable driving Puma I have ever drove…at almost 75 you could let go of the steering wheel. The setup I drove was not as fast as the 250 ProXS but it was an impressive motor. I am just not one to jump to the 4 stroke wagon yet but if you were a 4 stroke guy I could see it being a valiant competitor to the Verado. Judd Lasiter
You can help the hole-shot and murder the top end. The 4-strokes fire 1/2 as many times per engine revolution, and they are going to suffer from lack of torque as a result. Forced induction can make up for some of this, but to appreciate 2-stroke torque, you need to ride in a good 2-stroke powered boat. Running (say) an older 2.5 285hp racing motor from merc. They make a _ton_ of torque and they can spin a prop fast enough to sling the blades off in a heartbeat. The 4-stroke market is likely going to end up addressing a slightly different market. The boats with Verados ride like Cadillacs, smooth, quiet, efficient, etc. And heavy. The two-strokers are more like a corvette or whatever, lighter, louder, more finicky on fuel and oil requirements, etc. I still cant bring myself to like the 4-strokers, but if my dad were alive he would own one as big and comfortable was at the top of his list, while I wanted stiff suspension and hot-rodded V8 power in my old cars… But torque is a weak point, and always will be, as long as we have the option of comparing to two-strokes, which is not a long-term given in light of the tree-huggers wanting to ban anything that burns dino fuel.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Question for the motor people, not to steal the post….. If the 2 strokes have more torque then the 4 strokes, why do I see the 2stroke guys running the Bravo1s getting two sets of holes added to the props? I dont have them on my Bravo1 that I run on my 250 Verado and I think the hole shot is excellent. Would it be even better with them? My trophy prop blows out with the cav ring and all of the plugs filled.
