I bought a 1995 basscat pantera II about a year ago and I noticed a soft spot in the floor a few weeks ago. I decided to tear the carpet up just a little to see what was going on. I discovered it was actually floor rot. So I start tearing out the old floor and discover that there is a stringer that is also rotten. Is it worth fixing price wise? I have no idea how I could fix the stringers and the floors with the front deck with compartments in the way. I imagine this could cost thousands of dollars to fix. I paid 8000 for the cat and it still runs great but I am strongly disheartened and am at a stand still. Needing some inspiring words from fellow bass cat owners. Thanks guys.
I had an 84 model pantera pro . in 1990 I had the same problem from a crack that i could not see. the boat has some of the best glass and gelcoat made. I also ran the pantera for 10 more years no more problems. fix it.
Theres a Restoration Forum over on BassBoatCentral.com, I bet the guys over there can give you some good advice.http://www.bbcboards.net/bassboat-restoration/
I feel for ya, similar thing happened last August as I bought my first boat/Cat. I went over the boat what I thought… Very good. Checking transom, floor weak spots etc. One area I didnt look was the dry storage area that he had about 6 life jackets stuffed in, and quickly told me hed throw those in with it. My first trip to the lake with my wife with me.. She insisted on getting life jackets out and she took them all out…. And the whole box was gone with rot. Talk about a rotten feeling!! Six months later…I had a guy fix it… One, cause I couldnt rightly sell it like that. Two, cause I wanted to see his work before I turned him loose on a much nicer 93 I just bought with extensive outside fiberglass/Gelcoat damage. He can fix yours Im sure, but, I need to give you some heads up before taking anything to him. He has some guys that works at the shop that are not so careful as they should be, while hes away at dealerships doing work, so Id give him some warnings beforehand. I wont go into detail here. Hes in Kannapolis NC, if your interested, let me know.
Yes, it can be fixed. The floor job should be in the 500 dollar range, depending on the extent of the damage. A good portion of my floor is wasted. Ive got 2 quotes in the 500 dollar range. As for the stringer, I dont know. But, Id bet it would be in the same ballpark, price wise.
The stringer is the hard part here . – ALL of the rotted wood needs to be removed , and then the area affected needs to be dried completely before repairing . — It can be done , but dont get in a hurry .
Yeah I have been tearing into it some getting the floor ripped out and I have discovered the stringers are pretty much rotten in some spots. I am curious if this can be pieced out and scabbed and epoxied and fiberglassed to last me a few more years until I can afford another cat….. Ill post pictures soon.
Ive been lucky enough to get in on some of these type repairs , and they were as solid after the repair as when they were built . — The hard part is having access to the area needing repair . — Piecing it in is about the only way to do it . — When you cut your wood to fit into the spots youve removed , you need to fishplate it where the pieces come together . — After you get all the wood replaced , just fiberglass it all in and it will last a long time . — Be sure to sand the old fiberglass with 40 grit wherever you plan to glass back to it so it sticks real good . — Hoss
