Tournament rule question

Ok while fun fishing I hook a 3+Lb smallie and just before he gets in the net he breaks off, he is jumping trying to throw my 30 dollar plug, got the troller on high and finally get lucky and net the fish. In a tournament, is this fish legal.Thx

Well……right or wrong…..my dad and I weighed a 4.5 pounder that did that to us. Technically, Id say its probably not a legal fish. At the upper levels of tournament fishing, Id say definitely not a legal fish. If it broke while in the net, yes. If… If you caught it with the net and no line connection, no.

I thought my co angler was going to toss me overboard when I let one go that he scooped well after it broke my line. I am not sure about foul hooked fish that started mouth hooked but ended up with a different treble hook in there side and the original mouth hook free.Practice Angling CPRCatchPictureRelease2010 PIV 200SHO

More info: If the fish were laying there motionless after the line broke, that would be a real grey and very technical area. Based on the time since line break and position of the fish it could be very difficult to have the same TD opinion every time. Thats a tough one? If the fish moved at all and swam, no its not a catch.

As far as foul hooked fish in the situation Dwayne described , I would say legal fish in any state that doesnt require they be hooked INSIDE the mouth only . — watched Steve Kennedy throw back an 11lb-r once . — ( California ) — That had to hurt .

A guy I know up here in MN was fishing I-Falls Bass Championship on Rainy lake and had a smallie follow the fish he hooked all the way to the boat, jumped, and into the net along with the hooked fish! TD said it was not a legal catch, but heck of a story.

Heard of one here where a large bass broke line in a treetop, angler continued fishing and came back to fish the treetop a few hours later. He flipped his jig in and hooked some line, pulled the line to the boat and the fish was still tugging on the other end. They were able to land the fish, which was over 8 lbs. It wasnt a tourney, but always wondered what a TD would have ruled on that one. It was the same fish as the lure was still hooked in his mouth.
