Hey guys, Im trying to get some feedback here before I attempt to lower my under spare tire holder on my Margay. I recently upgraded to 15″ rims and its only giving me about 1/2″ clearance between the boat and tire now. I cant remember what the clearance was before on the originals and I already sold those rims. I would like more of a buffer zone than 1/2″ so Im going to lower it but it has been brought to my attention by a friend that dropping it too low can pose a new concern of possible impact. Im guessing all trailer are made different so I wonder if where mine lays now has room to be adjusted as opposed to other BassCat trailers. Ive heard of others scraping on steep ramps with their factory mounted and never altered holder but maybe theirs sits differently than mine so thats what Im trying to figure out. If you guys wouldnt mind letting me know where the lowest part of your spare tire holder sits and if it ever scrapes at the ramp. I dont have any up in MA that are steep but I dont want those ramps to be off limits to me going forward. Trying to find that happy medium. If I can get an idea of how low it can go or if it can even be lowered would help me in my calculations. BassCat, what would you feel comfortable with as being the lowest point of the tire or holder off of the ground?General consensus questions:1) What is the distance from the lowest point of your tire to the ground (do you ever scrape)?2) What is the distance between the tire and your keel (does your keel or bow hook ever hit)?3) What type of boat/trailer its on?Here are mine:Margay: 1/2″ from tire to keel9″ from lowest part of tire (rear) to the ground)11″ the lowest part of the spare tire holder to the groundThanks guysJay
Wouldnt dimensions 2 & 3 vary depending on hitch height since youre referencing off the ground? My 12 P-II1-3/4″” from tire to keel11″ from lowest part of tire (rear) to the ground)13″ the lowest part of the spare tire holder to the ground The spare has never interfered with loading or unloaded…ever!Last edited by GRR884 on May 8th, 2013, 10:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Thats a good point. I have mine level on my driveway now and thats how I grab the measurements but you are right, I will hook it up to the hitch tomorrow to see how true my numbers still are. Sounds like mine is already a couple of inches lower than yours, not off to a good start here. Thanks for the input and your efforts Jay
Dont know if it will help in your situation, but I have a Sabre FTD that was rubbing the top back side of the spare tire on steep ramps. Minimal clearance originally. I used a wedge (window wedge used to unlock car doors) to raise the front of the tire which changed the angle of the tire in comparison to the hull. I would try that before making major changes to the holder.
I removed the tire from trailer and put it in the back of pickup. total bull to put a tire there.
RazorCat, I like that wedge. BassCat recommended I prop it up also, which I did but all that does is takes the rub off the rear and gives me 1/2″ off the front and rear tire to the keel. Still not enough. How many inches do you have as clearance? I like the spacing of yours. I will probably incorporate the wedge concept into my design since it can only help but as of now its not enough. I like the finished look of the window wedge.rbcat, I thought of that idea also but I dont have a pick up and have very limited room in my tow vehicle. But I like these ideas of alternatives. Thank you
What about side mounting the spare. You can get an aftermarket bracket to mount your spare. I had an R boat with a side mounted spare. I cant recall who, but someone on here has a Cat with a side mounted spare. Maybe they will chime in.Mike
SIDE MOUNT WOULD BE ME…I DECIDED ON IT AFTER I SAW SAM RUSHS SPARE….I REALLY LIKE MINE….AND I LIKE THE LOOK ALSO…..
I was told the Margay is not designed for a side spare, optimally. Doesnt look like it would be a graceful fit if I wanted to. Thats why Im trying to focus on the under mount but still unsure of the lowest point I could drop it. Thanks for the response
