Lowrance LMS-520C versus Humminbird 787c2

I value the opinions of all BCB owners who post on this board, and I would once again like to solicit your opinions. Im sure there are many varying thoughts on this, but Id like to know a few opinions on which unit is better, the Lowrance LMS-520C or the Humminbird 787c2? Id appreciate hearing your choices and why? Im particularly interested in hearing any thoughts about ease of use (including software updates), options and color and quality of display. Thanks!

For a bow unit the side imaging doesnt add much if any value imho. Thats because to get a photo-like picture you have to be moving 3-5 mph and in a relatively straight line; a tough requirement while using a trolling motor. But on the console the side imaging is great where you can idle by and “paint” a picture. But for regular 2D sonar, identifying fish and vertical drop-shotting the Lowrance is still superior imho. The 787 units are comparable to the 520c units. They do not have side imaging and more Humminbird units are being installed every day at BCB. The 520 is a fine unit and proven. The choice is yours, and we would think that a 797 si unit on the bow would be nice. It is especially nice as a small side imaging unit at the dash instead of the much more expensive larger 997si. BCB

Too many 7s in the product line to keep them all straight; 787–797. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I still havent played with my 987c SI enough to really see the full capabilities in all situations yet; especially in the 2D sonar. Im still in awe of and cant seem to change away from the 3D SI images. Im still trying to figure out a cheap way of playing with Lowrances new supposedly High Def 2D remote sonar unit too. Fun stuff! I have owned the 332 (prior number to the 520, maybe 2) and the 987 on the last 2 boats. So I have had 2 of each. That is a tough call, I like the GPS much better on the Hbird than I do the Lowrance. The 2d graph on the Hbird needs some adjustment on the sensitivity out of the box but it will show you everything that the Lowrance does but it takes a little getting used to if you are used to the Lowrance. I can still see a spoon vertically jigging it under the front of the boat. It does show things a little differently, like stumps is a great example. Now after having them both I prefer the Hbird. Especially when you pair it with the sidefinding technology, the customer service of Hbird vs Lowrance and the interlink software. Good luck. Judd Lasiter

I have the 520C and not swap it for he Hbird at this point in time. I have had Hbird products in the past and always had issues with them at crunch time. Lowrance has always been a solid performer. OVB
