Running a 25 4 blade on a 05 cougar,prop has a black ring around motor side of prop. what is it for? have plugs in {sm.} I think and having trouble blowing out in rough water, also hitting rev limiter. lowered motor 3/8 still same problem. changed prop different 4 blade without plugs,older prop that has holes but cannot put plugs in,still overreving

That is an exhaust ring. It will help with your blow-out problem. If you remove it, your problem will likely get worse. Sounds like you should try a 26″ trophy prop and see if that will cure your problems. You might also try plugging all the vents with solid plugs. That might help some, but I think a larger prop is your solution. The larger prop will definitely help keep you out of the rev limiter. Hope that helps. The cavitation ring/blow out ring/ whatever you want to call it ring is for adjusting for holeshot, help guard against blow out, and prevents weeds from getting behind the prop which can and will hurt holeshot. Any prop with any plug variation including the ring will not prevent overrev when running hard in rough water. Any time the prop breaks free of water it will overrev. Lowering the engine on the jack plate plate and trimming the engine down helps, but wont cure. I have hydraulic plates on mine and can lower the engine for this sole purpose, but it wont prevent it from overreving from time to time if Im running it hard in rough water. It helps, but it wont cure it. If youre experiencing this in big water with 5-6 footers running at slower speeds, then thats a whole different story. With this situation, driver experience comes into play along with the different props and setups.Last edited by PhilAddison on May 27th, 2008, 1:10 am, edited 1 time in total.

PA Its blowing out trying to keep nose up in big water, not jumping across the tops of them. Do you think I could turn a 26? 225 opti not xs

I am 1/4 in below flush on front edge of manual jack plate, have not measured from pad,not sure how to do that anyway. Leaving for Canada friday and do not want to get in big water on rainy with this problem.. Thanks Greg

The best solution for lakes like Erie is to run a Five Blade. Though it does not sound like you have time to set that up. The answer otherwise is to try plugging some vent holes. Engineh height sounds good and we would run a smaller wheel in rough water and watch the RPMs also.

As BCB stated……………….go smaller in pitch and lower the engine.
