I moved from Maryland to Memphis about a year ago and have sure missed the fishing. My son all but hates it here because he thinks the only fish you can catch are bream and catfish with the occasional crappie and bass. I are going to Pickwick this week to try and prove to the kid that there is good fishing around here…I have done a lot of online research, bought a detailed map, got every lure known to man, and think Im ready to go. Was hoping some of you locals might share a bit of advice either in this thread or via a personal message. My plan is to go up Hwy 25, use the ramp at Spring Valley boat dock, and fish yellow creek and edgs of the main water. Would I be better off to go on up to the dam or maybe stop at Scrubb Bridge? We wont be able to get there until around 9 a.m. but can fish all day. Catch and release just for fun and it sure would be nice to put him into a smallie or two…he lives to fish. Many thanks for any tips.
Give me a shout and will see if I can help you out a little. Maybe even arrange a little semi-guided trip or something for your first trip up there. Is a very good lake but would help you out a little with navigation and such. Thanks Joey Watts 662-838-3526 flatlands247@aol.com
It appears your son is used to the Potomac River. Otherwise Maryland is not that noted. Take him out early and get a top water bite hooked up, and drop down to Guntersville when its hot. Go up to K Lake and ledge fish some. He will enjoy that as much as that tidal fishing.
Yeah, the Potomac plus several lakes in MD where we used to fish but those creeks of the Potomac are a lot of fun. I have been trying to find somewhere that is a day trip and not a four hour ride one way, and that has been the challenge. I do plan on hitting Kentucky Lake on a trip where we stay over. Am hoping we can figure out how to do a daytrip to Pickwick since Im already way out east. Joey, I appreciate the offer and I will send you an email. thanks all.
There is some great fishing at Pickwick. Take Joey up on his offer he knows the lake well. Oh yeah Joey how are you related to Charles. There is also a good guide service that you may take a stab at after you fish with Joey. fishpickwick.com
No I am not but know of the other Watts you are talking about. if not mistaken their are 2 of them that fish together and they are some pretty good sticks. Believe they live in Olive Branch or some where around there. About 25 miles or so from me. Think I have even fished against them many years ago when I was still fishing tournaments. I am heading up to Pickwick in the morning. Have a date with a few top water fish early then out to the ledges I go. Caught some really good fish up there when I took my father and am anxious to get back up there. Thanks and Good Luck
Hooah for Guntersville!
When Joey appeared the WATTS clan QUIT!!!BAYOU BANDIT
Gary, was real nice chatting with you. Hope you and have your son have a nice trip at the lake tomorrow. Pickwick is a very pretty lake and youll should have a good time either way. Just go slow, take your time and fish some of the areas we talked about. Had a very good day on the water myself yesterday. Guessing we caught some where around 50 fish. Caught a couple early on top water and other baits then around 9:00 we hit the ledges. Caught most of our fish in 17 to 25 of water with the boat setting in 35 to 50 of water. Caught them on big spinner baits, c-rigs, football jigs, couple on swim baits, (first time I have ever fished them) and out best bait was a zoom 10″ ole monster rigged on one of my Pro Football/Spring Shake Head. That thing will stand one of these big worms straight up and the fish were killing it dargged and hopped off these ledges. Guy I fished with yesterday had never caught fish any where near this deep and he had a blast. Both out wrist were almost to sore to set the hook any more when we left the lake last night !!! Take Care and Good Luck
