Friends, Anyone having any issues with the above mentioned units regarding depth reading? On my 998 of late the reading will be just great at LOZ from off the trailer to well past 80 FT of water.and then go to 1.5 to 1.3ft. and stay there for a while then go back to normal. No other issues on the unit, “Other than the fact” I got a call from some others at Springfield and at the lake saying that they are experienceing the same thing!! Am I missing a update or what?? Tried switching transducers on the sorner menu “but” same results.Maybe Flyswatter has a idea??ChuckAnybody??Thanks for the link, looks like a lot of us in the same “boat” forgive the pun!! My 898 has been locking up for the last month at 3.6 for long periods. I was about ready to change transducers as I had tried everything HB had suggested. All of a sdden last week it just quit doing it. Baffled!
my 858 on the bow is doing the same thing. It started a while back where the graph was reading ok if you put it on manual lower depth but the read out was only 1. I updated software and that fixed it for a day but it started doing it again. There are a couple of other issues I was having with it also. My 998 unit I have on the console has problems with the on/off button. I have to unplug it to turn it off. Sent these units in twice with no fix so that was the last straw for my humminbird adventures. I fixed the problem up front by installing a lowrance depth finder. I use the humminbird for maps and the lowrance for sonar. Got an HDS 5x for only $385 with rebate from bass proshops. I already had a ram mount for it so no cost there. Only thing is I have to turn the brightness down some on the lowrance so my eyes will adjust and still be able to see the humminbird maps. BCB Note: Screen shows low voltage also. The wiring in the front may not be enough to supply both units.Last edited by 1958 on May 13th, 2012, 5:12 pm, edited 2 times in total.
I had same kind of issue with my 997. Im running a y cable and using an in hull ducer for 2D and ducer on back for imaging. Mine started giving me problems when I would run at high speeds or get into deeper water. All of the sudden would quit giving depth readings or the 1 readings like you reported but oddly enough the side imaging still worked fine. Sometimes if I turned unit off it would correct the problem but not always and I originally thought it was Y cables fault. However, having the Y cable helped to narrow down that it might be a problem with 2D ducer or sonar settings. Went into 2D settings and I believe I limited the max depth setting for the 2D sonar. Have not had a single issue since. I can check my settings and report back when I get home I you think it will be helpful?
Id used to get same 1.5 to 2 reading in 30 of water. It was a faulty transducer in the battery compartment area. Replaced the transducer and no more issues. One possibility could be the new 6.180 update on 898s users. So either reboot to older system, think 5.75 and evaluate. If problem still exist then I think bad transducer is the issue.Good luck!Last edited by Flyswatter on May 11th, 2012, 4:02 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Having the same issue with a 997… Loses depth, but SI keeps on trucking.. Havent isolated the problem yet.. Going to update software to latest version and play with a few settings.. It is terribly annoying..
Go join the “unoffical” humminbird forum. They have had several similar issues. My 570DI. Did it and a software update fixed it. The guys on thatsite are just like here. They will help anyway they can and several are humminbird employees.
Sir, Just where is that “unoffical” HB forum site at, just google it?
