I have a 2010 optimax on my sabre turning a 23 tempest and I havent hit the rev. limiter.Top speed is 61 MPH.What I was wondering is will I have enough motor to turn a 24 fury or is there something better to try on my rig?
i had a 2007 sabre with a 150 EFI and i could turn a 24 fury, it work out well, i got about 1.5 mph out of the prop, no vent plugs, my rpm dident drop to much from my 23 tempest
Dont know that Id make the investment. See if you can find one to try first. It should drop your rpms at least 300 and you arent hitting the limiter now.I run an 08 Sabre w/ 150efi turning a 24 Tempest. Its just ticked the limiter in 45 degree weather running light and gpsd 67. How it runs is weight sensitive and full tanks, wells, and passenger do have a big impact. Fully loaded – 62 typically. Im planning on having my prop B&Bd – but dont think mine will turn the fury well. Most say a worked tempest will run with a fury and carry a load better due to wheel diameter.
Hey Jeff – I have an 01 Sabre with a 23 Tempest Plus on a 150efi. Have you ever turned this prop on your boat? If so, could you tell much of a difference when you put the 24 on your rig?
Andy, something isnt right, do you carry all your tackle upfront? or a lot of extra weight, what is your propshaft height? John S.
I have alot of weight up front and very little in the back. And I do mean alot of weight up front.I have a 8 inch slidemaster and if the plates are level to each other I have it raised about 1/4 inch.I have run it as high as a inch but water pressure was to low and I still havent hit the limiter.Last edited by AndyYerger on April 12th, 2011, 5:20 pm, edited 1 time in total.
lighten it up and move weight to the rear, measure prop shaft height. Try 3 1/4″ to 3 1/2″ and see how she runs. I think Ive heard for every 10 lbs. upfront approx. loss of 1 mph. or for every 100 lbs. in the back of the boat loss of 1 mph. Obviously there are a lot of other factors to consider. John S.
Now its starting to make some more sense. Longer story – but bear with me…..Mine was slowing down a lot and I asked Ivan @ BCB what was wrong with my setup. Problem is weight distribution. He said eliminate as much weight from the front of the consoles as possible. I carry most of my tackle in the storage behind the passenger and leave the box behind me for my partners gear. I only use the front storage for light items and a tackle daybox. In front is rainsuit, life jackets, net, ect….. If its light and large its either in there or my driver rod storage. I also move the planos that Ill probably use for the day to that box as well as what soft plastics I may need. The soft plastics bag w/ 20lbs. of stuff now rides in the floor between the seats. Lightening up the front was worth an instant 3mph. and the front lifts like it did new. I dont carry a BPS in the front box anymore. I rotate tackle by season. If theres no chance Ill use it – its on a shelf in the garage. Sabreskis right on the weight distribution and speeds.I had my prop buried and was overtrimming to get the heavy front to lift. With a tall rooster, prop torque, and water pressure that was marginal I thought I was too high on the plate. Bought a 23 tempest plus and loved the prop. I was able to come up 5/8″ on the plate – use half the trim and it was a different boat to drive. Good wp, one hand steering, low rooster and minimal chine walking. I started getting into the rev limiter if I wasnt fully loaded and letting it run. I won a new prop in a tourney and ordered a new 24 Tempest Plus. Even number Tempests are a crap shoot – most are “off” when you get one and need working to perform. My original 24 was a turd. The new 24 runs better than the 23. Ill only use the 23 in the heat of the summer now when my rpms drop off. Ive seen 67 by myself and 1/2 tank of gas. Depending on partner – tourney loaded with full wells and gas will do at least 62. Will probably send the 24 for a full B&B and may see some more.

He must be talking about me………..the “partner”….cause I know we aint ever gotten 64-65….Being a big boy riding in Jeffs boat and with the weight distribution, Jeff just tells me to bring 3 rods, with 3 lures. A guy half my size can bring his gearJust kidding, Jeff is very meticulous about his setup………and a great friend as well.
