Ive got my eye on a few, an 04 cougar w/ 250 yamaha HPDI dual console. Probably my favorite, if its still for sale. 07 Cougar, really nice DC but it only has a 225 Merc. And the furthest away. And only has a 225. lol And a Puma SC here in town 2010 w/ 250 Pro XS, but its the most expensive. Actually it and the 07 Cougar are about the same price. How do yall feel about a Cougar w/ a 225. I feel like thats why its priced lower than it probably should be based on comparisons. B/c of the 225.Last edited by polaris425 on January 14th, 2016, 8:21 pm, edited 1 time in total.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
I have an 07 Puma with a 225 Pro XS (which is for sale). I never thought it was underpowered. I just got a 15 Cougar with a 250, It is definitely faster but I really cant drive it faster because as soon as you need to “drive” it, I back off. 69-70 is fast enough for me. I would not hesitate to buy a 225 powered 20 Cat. Especially if it was a bargain.
As long as all are in about the same shape, I would look hard at the 2010 model that is priced about the same as one that is 3 years older. Plus if Im not mistaken, the 2010 model will have be a different hull than the 2007 model. Someone will need to verify that, Im not sure it was the cougar and puma or just the cougar that was updated after 2008. As far as the 225, I just bought an Eyra with a 225. The price was definitely a big factor, but Im very happy so far. I realize that the Eyra and Puma are different hulls, but this rig has plenty of speed and acceleration, especially since I normally carry a light load.
Hes correct the 10 model is the updated hull. One thing you might consider when buying a used boat with an engine that is not the max HP rating for the hull, chances are owner didnt care about speed and thats the only place youll really notice the extra 25 ponies. So what Im saying is chances are he probably babied it. I would pay the money to have the hours pulled off of each one and see what kind of RPMs those motors have turned. I would be willing to bet the 225 has less high RPM hours then the 250?
When I was searching, I felt like I just had to have a 250. Things didnt go as planned and I lost my job. After 8 months of being unemployed, I got back to work and started keeping my eye open moreso than searching. My 04 Cougar kind of fell into my lap. I could afford it and I loved the colors BUT it “only” had a 225. I test drove it with a 25 Trophy and got it up to 70 with no load in it except gas and 2 people and at the time I had never driven a boat that fast and was convinced Id be satisfied and could upgrade the engine farther down the road. I have since put a 25 Fury on and have had it to 73 with a full load and one person. Ill admit that a boat with a 250 can pass me, but I can run with a lot of boats and even pass some myself. I have never felt that it was underpowered by any means. Yes, a 250 would be nice but its not essential to getting good performance out of a BassCat.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
If I remember right, P.A. was smoking most boats of other brands with a Puma and 225 Merc few years back. Granted he had it set up and could drive the snot out of it but the fact remains that a 225 can haul the mail. Resale can be an issue as you have noticed but if you plan to hold on to it not the biggest concern. Set up right I believe a Puma/Cougar will run low to mid 70s unless your partner is one of those 300lb guys. Eyra faster yet.

Im pulling these figures out of my memory, but my last faults and warnings printout had my +5500 RPM hours at about 15% of my total hours. Im a 50 mph cruiser most of the time.
Thanks for the tips guys. Might be getting close to just calling Sherm and talking to them about trading the Sabre in on a Cougar they have.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
