My old Maxxum 74 is on its last leg and I think its time for an upgrade for my 99 Pantera 3. I was looking at maybe getting an Ultrex for the old girl. I was hoping for some input from you guys. For one I’m assuming the foot pedal will still fit in my recess, I saw the measurements- it looks like it will be tight but will fit. The next question is whether to step up to the 36 volt or stay with a 24. I think I could get another battery in there by bridging the bilge and moving the oil tank, but I’m not sure if I want to add the extra weight back there and also I just added a new 3 bank in there so I’d need to deal with that too. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!
Scuttle butt has it that lowrance is coming out with their own TM in 2019. But the Ultrex is awesome. 36 volt is the ticket!

It’s going to be interesting in 2020 on the trolling motor front. Though DO NOT let what’s coming interfere with decisions on what you want now. Make a choice and go with your best choice as the experience is extremely good and you deserve a great on water experience.
We think the 24 volt units are fine if your satisfied with that now. Also if your going from MotorGuide to MinnKota, remove the side plate to expose the same bolt patterns. You do not have to Redrill and cut your deck up.
I would stay with 24 volt. We are doing more and more vertical fishing. I would say go with the Ultrex ifyou have the money for it.
You may look around and find a good deal on a used Fortrex. We got a 1 year old 80 lb for $600.

I have sold and installed many Ultrex’s on Basscats, all the way from the Sabre to the Puma (not yet on the Jaguar, but did sell one for a Jaguar). The footpedals fit fine. One modification I make is to drill a hole under the plug, large enough to pass the wiring from the footpedal through and connect it straight to the trolling motor wiring at the back of the plug. This eliminates the plug as that is tight at that point with the steering cables coming off and the plug sticking out. I then place a 60A breaker with a cutoff at the positive battery post, using a copper battery strap that I make. This allows you to disconnect the trolling motor, eliminating the draw that variable speed MinnKotas have on the batteries. Also, on your boat the 24V will be fine. Not need for the extra battery and/or weight. If I can help, we ship all over the US, give me a call.

I have an Ultrex 36v on my Cougar. I love it. With that said, my camp is on the St Lawrence river… lots of current. Unless your dealing with 2+mph current the 24v is fine.
Thanks for input guys. John, I appreciate the install tips. I have bought a few TMs from you over the years, in fact my Max74 I need to replace I purchased from you. I will give you a call when its time to get one coming (after I heal up from selling this kidney) 😁
Id go for the 36v if you have the room for the extra battery. Cant think of one time i ever thought “Man i sure wish i had less power”.
Had a 36v fortrex on my p2 and it was amazing completely spoiled me. My puma had a 80 mg tour and i never really liked it felt so weak compared to what i was used to.

I have 2000 Plll and recently converted it to 36 volt. My charger was on the transom so adding a battery and moving the oil tank in the middle wasn’t bad at all. Just remember to use lots of zip ties so you don’t get confused.I’m also on Erie enough that I needed the conversion best thing I ever did and ya it’s a little heavier but I adjusted the venting in my prop for my holeshot and didn’t lose any top end.
You should use a plastic, aluminum or glass for the flat support. He wood allows wicking and keeps moisture, with a poor seal into the floor.
Already changed it out had a tournament the next day and was in a pinch for time so I rigged this up good thing too I ended up winning the tournament. Thanks BCB!!
