Any update on the release date of the new box for older models
No, they haven’t worked on the tooling.
I saw the new box at Bowden’s booth at the Houston Boat Show yesterday. It is really nice and a definite improvement. I’ll be ordering one once they are available!
Any update, or at least some type of a target date?
Last I read, they will only be making them for new boats until they finish the plant expansion. Even then they may not make them for any boats they do not already have the step mold made for.
The cost and labor on the step box is prohibitive. The box requires a smaller width and new tooling, with molds for retro fit on older seats and models. Another concern is the production costs are actually higher than most would understand for that assembly.
Upgrade costs are not as staggering as these are replacing existing seats or carpeted steps with a cost and labor already accrued. The shooting of the molds is with the existing gelcoats and that adds little time in the process. For us to manufacture it as a one off part is just not efficient.

How far back did the size change that you have to retro fit to a smaller width? Sounds like a pretty in demand thing that you would sell quite a few. Your making them anyway and I`m guessing they are all different colors. I guess we all have to buy a new boat to get one.
To load the spray guns for special colors requires 2 quarts of gelcoat lost. They estimated just the new smaller retro mold, tooling labor and tooling cost for molds at over $130 per part alone, at cost.
We are building them anyway, though not in the smaller size and not extra parts. These require 3 more parts, hardware and assembly. They have held firm on not building the step box due to the costs, room and waste. They do estimate there might be 25 to 40 boxes a year possibly for the first two years in sales.
I have a 16 cougar ftd. My biggest complaint on the older carpeted box is the hinges. The rivets break often and have to keep drilling them out and re rivet it. I dont know how many more times it will continue to hold. I used steel rivets in a couple holes and seems to help but afraid they will wear there fiberglass holes after a while.
Thinking the new boxes would cure that. But not knowing how they are attached I could be wrong.

So to be clear, they will not be available as a separate purchase? The step will only be available for new builds, and BCB will only build 25-45 boxes a year for those?

I think what he means is that they estimate they would only sell 25-40 boxes if they did offer them to the people that wanted them. Its too bad!!

I hate to his this! My wife had talked to Rick last yr at the boat show. She was looking forward to this upgrade. I figured they would be costly and lead time might be lengthy. Depending on wat colors were being run. With certian colors having a quicker turn around. I had suspected only certian yr models would be available. Though i had hoped since the p2 hadnt changed in sveral yrs this model would be a easy pick. Im sure with the market being flooded with new purchases of boats and the expansion bcb’s plate is overrunning. Though i hope this upgrade eventually comes available.
That is correct that estimates for aftermarket sale were 25 to 40 per year. Thus another challenge is staffing for production and the skill sets required.
We have tried to be open on our challenge with aftermarket and it’s still a thought. We need more room before we ever address this as possible. Then it’s molds, and color challenges.
It may happen, though right now it’s not on the radar.

Double post… sorry

What is the width on the new box vs the carpeted box
