Crack on swing tongue weld

Being a guy that works with steel daily. When you start getting cracks. Most if the time there is movement.and it dont take much. Have you removed the bolts and checked for wear? The design bcb uses here is a strong design. Really not much can be done for strength aside from using thicker gussets. This failure appears to be in the HAZ  area.. To repair this the bolt needs to be removed. During the welding process most likely the bushing hole will shrink. And will need to be drilled or reamed after the repair is done and cooled to ambient temperature. The crack needs to be beveled from each side before welding. I personally would use a 7018 stick rod over a 70s or 71t wire. Not to get to deep in metalurgy but a 7018 has more flex so to speak vs. Wire that tends to be brittle. I will add this is a simple repair and shouldnt take long to repair.

Just another opinion:  It appears from the picture that the brackets are only welded on one side and that the weld shown was less than adequate.  The weld failed – because it was a bad weld.  Nothing to do with design, use or function.   Any competent weld shop can repair – just have them look at some of the other welds to ensure they are adequate.

Being a certified welder on Mig and Stick as well as a welding Engineer I’m not going to debate the penetration patterns between the two types of welding or the detrimental effects on the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ).  However, I will defend my insinuation that regardless of the process used  a bad weld is a bad weld.

Actually, the cam arm cracked and there is little travel. You can notice that crack on the rusty area of the actual laser cut cam. From the cam you can see the crack traveling through the weld. Not defending the weld itself either. The cam piece is welded to the DOM tubing, which the pin and bolt are inserted in. The area obviously receive a considerable amount of punishment as we have even had a couple of the bolts shear.

We have not seen a major amount of these and if this is near a period of warranty we would visit your dealership.
