The new Boat Builder is pretty sweet but I have a question about the “Rules”.
Why are some colors not available in certain areas? For example, why isn’t black available for the hull? I currently have a 2014 Puma and the hull is black as well as the trailer fenders and cap. When I order another boat, I will want this same color scheme so I am kinda confused about these new rules.
Thanks
Eugene
They have removed black from the deck area and most likely it was accidentally removed from the hull because the designers of the site were going by body colors. BCB has eliminated black as a body color, which means deck color.
So black is available for the hull and cap but not the nose cap? I am not sure where the deck or body areas are.
So im confused as well!. So are we talking about gel black or the Malibu colors as well!
Black and some other colors are under consideration as being stricken from the deck colors for limited UV resistance. Other competitors do offer them and they do not have the concerns we do regarding the long term exposure. If you look at the small pin stripe on ours and other older brands you will notice premature chalking.
This sounds good for new boats sales!! But not so good for us that have colors of black for top caps knowing about limited Uv protection!
Malibu colors are not black, they are black flake in a clear gelcoat. There have been extremely few black decks ever built.
Black definitely requires more up keep to prevent oxidation. But all gels will succumb to the sun’s UV’s eventually if they are not protected. If an owner can’t or won’t protect their investment, then it doesn’t matter what color it is. Maybe educating the consumers that some colors do not have the same UV protection and then let them decide will be considered rather than just banning those colors.
My current 2014 Puma was delivered in Sept. 2013 It has a white nose cap, black cap, black hull, white boot, applered trim, malibu red bolt, malibu red consoles, malibu red cap inserts, white mini bolt, and black trailer steps and fenders.
It still looks immaculate today. The hardest thing to maintain are the trailer step and fenders. Tennis shoes with the slightest sand or dirt just grind into the gel. Also, rock chips are hell on the front side of the fenders. Need some mylar protection on the front side like the auto manufactures use on the lower panels to prevent the rock chips.
The concern is not new product as that generally gets reasonable cleaning, waxing and protected when stored inside. The older product does not get this TLC and it definitely shows wear. When some of our competition is gone or much younger than BCB, it wears on our emotions when those older products are compared to those manufactured today. We frequently hear an owner of a 1990’s Pantera II model offer opinion on the ride, hole shot and durability.
That boat is now 25-30 years old and bears no comparisons to a 2019 model Pantera II, no different than a 1991 Chevrolet has no impact on a 2019 model. Everything is totally different today, still silver paint in 1991 definitely gave a lot of grief.
We try hard and offer assistance on many older boats which are fourth, fifth or that in ownerships. Those customers of a 1995 model don’t understand why we built it that way when we knew it would oxidize or whatever.
Those used boat owners may also be our next new boat consumer and how we treat their boat purchase in decisions on the first ownership will definitely influence their eventual decision on their first new boat purchase.
We have never seen a 20-25 year old black or grey boat look pristine. They simply get passed down, often without a concern for their care on those third hand owners and beyond. Those one who care eventually become our challenge.
