Gas Gauge wiring help please

Left gas tank full but gauge show empty. Right gas gauge working properly. Need help following the wiring (black wire along with a yellow wire with red streak). Wires disappear and I am not sure where they emerge. Maybe a picture would help. Thank you.

The wiring runs from the sending unit to the dash. The dash activates the relay inside to switch from left to right tank or reverse. The wires are color coded and they each have colors into the dash assembly. Usually the wiring is fine, the sending units are the issue. Running jumper wires to the non operating gauges from the operating will indicate if the signal and senders work.

Well, I followed this yellow with red strip wire from top of tank to back of console. Connection was solid so I unplugged it, looked for any corrosion or debris and found none so reconnected. No improvement. Disconnected the 5 small bolts holding the sender down in the tank to find the float to be in the proper position. So the float is not the issue. May not have time to take to dealer before leaving for Canada, so inserted a clean wooden dowel into the full tank and marked the top of the wet spot with a Sharpie. You do what you have to do.

The old dip stick trick will always be accurate. We think you have a bad sending unit and they could send one direct to you for a trial run!

BCB, Yes sip (dip) stick is fool proof. I am picking up console for a friend up North from Alan Monday or Tuesday at the latest and will try to get a good sending unit at the same time. Do you think it could be an issue at my console? I may be getting really lucky and having someone bringing the console up to Lake of the Ozarks for me but haven’t heard yet.

Before you change the sending unit, remove and replace the two butt splices on the wires for the sending unit.

shef1 thanks for tip Cannot easily find the 2 butt splices. Wires disappear 3 times before showing up behind console in bundle before going into switch panel.

The only splice is at the sending unit itself.

As BCB said, they should be within a few inches of where the sending unit mounts on the tank.

shef1 Yes! Cut out Butt connector and rewired yellow/red wire first. No luck. Then did same with black ground wire. SUCCESS. Gauge works. Was in office with Rick Pierce this afternoon and he thought it had to do with a bad crimping tool. No matter. I appreciate your help. Thanks very much.

Thank you again to all that contribute to this resource. I was having the same problem with my 2017 Cougar FTD port tank not reading. Since I have smart craft gauges, and it was inop as well, it seemed logical that it was the connectors or the sender. I visually checked the butt connectors. No corrosion and a good pull on the wires showed a solid crimp. I was just about ready to order a sending unit when I read the post by shef1. I thought what the heck, I cut the butt connectors out, twisted the wires together and wouldn’t ya know. It worked!
