I own an ’07 Puma with an original ProPak III Charger. I used the boat on Saturday and connected the power to the charger when I got home on Saturday night. Immediately upon plugging it in all three banks went to red as they always do. After checking the charger a little while later, Bank #1 (the starter battery) was already green, and Banks #2 and #3 were still red — all of this is very normal and typical as compared to prior charging.
When I went out to disconnect the electric cord on Sunday morning I noticed that Bank #1 was still green, but that no light was registering for Banks #2 and #3. So, I disconnected the power, gave it a few moments and re-connected. Still no lights on 2 and 3 of any color. I then disconnected the power once again and removed all terminal connections and cleaned them, and then re-connected the power. Still no lights on 2 and 3. Then I attempted to remove the ShortStop 50 amp circuit breakers.., I say attempted, because in the process of removing them I ended up breaking the “copper” terminal in an effort to remove the nut which were corroded and frozen onto the bolt. I had exactly the same thing occur on each of the circuit breakers.
So, I took a trip to West Marine to buy new 50 amp circuit breakers. While at it I also bought new wire, terminals and connectors, and this time all of the materials were marine grade.
Here are my questions:
I’m not allowed to store the boat at the house (community assoc), so I have to drive to the storage facility to re-attach the new equipment. But before doing so, I was hoping to get your advice.
thank you,
Rick
Since I didn’t get any responses, could someone recommend a quality three-bank on-board charger. Thanks.
2. There are lots of good choices. Minn-Kota makes some good ones. I have been using pro-mariner ProSport 20 with no problems for a couple of years now.
If the batteries are discharged below a certain threshold, they will not charge, You can try putting them on a manual charger for a while, and then back onto the Pro Pak. I believe that those leads also have in line fuses that can be checked, although not likely that two leads will blow at the same time. Like OT mentions above, the short stop breakers have nothing to do with charging. If your charger needs replacing, Minn Kota and Dual Pro both make very good chargers.
Before you trash the charger, you might want to check the batteries voltage with the charger not plugged in. Then plug your charger in and check the voltage then to see if it’s charging the batteries. The lights on the charger do go bad. I am running a three bank and one bank the LED lights aren’t working correctly but it is charging fine. Use a decent Digital Volt Meter (DVOM) for this.
Gentlemen, thank you all for your responses. Your comments about the breakers not having anything to do with charging make sense. (Since they were original to the boat I guess it’s just as well that I’m replacing them.)
Although I haven’t yet checked them with the voltmeter, I believe the batteries are fine. Sunday morning before removing the breakers I tested the trolling motor and it ran strong, just as if the batteries had charged overnight.
What puzzles me most is that the red/green lights went out simultaneously. It just seems odd that it would happen that way.
Thanks again for your help.
