Steering cables are frozen on a 1988 Pantera. I wanted to order parts before working on it. I was about to order the Seastar SS152xx NFB™ Pro Rack Rack & Pinion Steering Kit with 13′ Dual Steering Cable kit. Is this my best option for repairing the steering? Looks like the kit is about $450. Looks like a pretty easy install but I wanted to make sure I shouldn’t be looking at something else. Also does anyone know the cable length I should get in the kit? I read the Pantera II had a length of 12.5’. Is the Pantera the same? If so should I go with 13’ instead of 12’? Thank you for the help.

For that age of model replacing cable steering is the best option. The factory staff always suggests replacing cables with cable steering, while the popular aftermarket replacement with anglers is the hydraulic option.

BCB staff still suggests cables on all models with cables. It’s just more price efficient and especially on a 1988 model.

Would you agree the seastar SS152 is the kit I need then? I’ve searched the forum and google and I haven’t found any concrete information. What about the length of the cable? I haven’t been able to find a database of cable lengths either.

The cable has the length on the jacket.

After researching hydraulic steering it looks like the Uflex Hytech 1.0 could be a good solution. Anyone have any experience or know if it’s comparable with the 88 Evinrude 150 XP?

That Uflex setup is similar to the BayStar. I wouldn’t use it on a 150. SeaStar Pro or Uflex Protech…I went with the Protech myself.
