I just purchased a 2021 Jaguar with a Mercury racing 400r.Looking for some possible setup help. The boat has 15 hours run time. It has a Bob’s 6 inch jackplate. A bravo1 25 pitch prop. The experienced salesman that has a 2023 Eyra with a 250. Told me that there was no need to use the jackplate for top end speed. He has spent some time in this boat. I have only two hours of seat time. His comment on not using the jackplate for performance I have in question. I have been driving boats since I was 10 years old. That’s 50 plus years. I also have a so called cigarette go fast boat. An Active Thunder with Mercury racing 565s a total of 1130 HP. I had never driven or been in a Bass Boat. I have been running the plate at 2 to 3 when on plane and around 5 to 7 on the trim. The top speed I’ve taken it to is 70mph. I want to be very cautious in my learning curve. I know the key is getting more of the boat out of the water. Anyone with knowledge of this setup would be of great help. They claim the boat will run 90mph. The prop slip calculator numbers with 1.75 gear case and a 25 pitch don’t seem to be possible. The funny thing while I’m typing this is I may have a new go fast boat if i can learn how to drive it. The other boat only runs 88mph. The next time were around some of the poker groups. I will tell them don’t ever question the ability of Bass Boat drivers hauling the mail.
The jackplate is definitely needed to achieve upper performance on this rig. What is your physical location and we would love to try and find someone close to assist you on learning.
That rig is capable of 90 MPH empty, though more into the mid to upper 80’s for most people. There is documentation on the new 400R on a Jaguar STS running lower 90’s and it did reach mid 90’s. This supercharged 2.6 ltr. block won’t quite get where the larger 5.7 V10 will go. To us that 25 Bravo 1 seems like a hole shot alteration by the previous owner. Most we ran the 27 Bravo on and some the 26 Fury. The fury has a short life cycle and should be traded at about 15-20 hours of top speed performance. The Bravo can run longer and we like them up to about 25 hours of top end runing. As long as you are not running top end hard they will all last for a daily driver.
We would suggest trying the new Ventera in a 26 or 26.5 series. The Ventera is a more durable propeller and should last on this application.
From memory that engine would red line at 6800 RPM, but it’s been a while, and hole shot requires the engine to be raised to vent the propeller. After that lower it and raise the engine accordingly on plane. Once you have it locked in and rolling, remember to lower the trim and rest the hull in the water, before backing off the throttle and slowly on trim and jackplate. Nothing should be fast, slow bumps up and down.
Good single engine drivers on heavier boats are quite talented as they don’t have the opposing forces controlling the torque like those dual and quad engine applications. The lighter boats are easier to manage performance and don’t require as much. This rig should be in the 4,000 pound range and that is going to require some seat time. It also puts a lot of stress on those propeller blades at top end.
If we can help we will.

Thanks, so much. I will check out some prop options. The boat is on Lake of the Ozarks, MO
At LOZ we should be able to get some seat time in that rig some day. If you have trouble learning then your not to far from the factory also.
