There are many different variables that are not in your post. What region do you live and run your boat, rpm range with either prop, weather, etc. With the 150hp engine you are under powered for the Sabre and therefore the top speeds are not going to be record setting. What are your expectations on this settup? I personally think you are trying to turn way to much wheel. Shrink the pitch up a bit and let that engine breath out to where it will get at or close to the rev limiter then you can fine tune it from there.BrianBrianHAWG Hunter2013 BassCat Eyra2013 Mercury 250 Pro XS Gen2 L/U
Thanks BrianBoat is used in the great midwest, Kansas and Missouri. The 23 Tempest is what i have run on my previous five 150hp boats and they turned about 5700 rpm. This boat i am only able to turn it about 5400 rpm and the fury is out of the question, too big for sure. The boat was set up by BCB at 4 inches below pad and i have tried down to 5 inches and up to three inches and no gain or loss. All boats before were 64 to 66 mph boats, gps, and this one is 59 to 60 gps. That 64 mph range is what i was expecting but all hulls are different and maybe thats out of the question being my first BCB. If you were going down in pitch what prop and size would you recommend?
What year and engines were your previous 150 rated boats, were they direct injected, Opti and HPDI? What reservoirs are you fishing. BCB
Years of motors were 95, 97, 99, 01, 04, and 07. All were EFI Mercs. Correction, the 99 was 175, all others were 150s. I guess i thought the Pro XS Optis were a hotter motor than the EFI motors. I may have been mistaken on that one as i have heard that the Pro XS 150s are just a sticker difference. Your thoughts? On to reservoirs most trips are to Truman with the occasional Lake of the Ozarks, Table Rock or Perry on the Kansas side.
Do as BCB recomends and go up with the MP until you start to feel left hand engine torque. 5400 rpm is way to low but you are in a very hot and humid area. Therefore you may have to have a prop for summer and a different prop for spring and fall. Just remember bigger is not always better in this arena. You have to get that engine up in the rpm range to get the peak hp and comfort/performance range out of it. Call Ivan at BCB when they come back from their summer break he is a wealth of knowledge on the different set ups. The people on this board will also give you a great selection of different opinions on what the better props are for your application. What little knowledge I do have, I gained from the people on this board and trial and error. What I like and expect out of a prop is different than what some others may like. The lakes I run on out here in SoCal are a lot smaller than what you have available to you there in the Mid West and we have to deal with a lot of lake traffic all the time. Therefore I like a prop with a lot of stability, more so than just raw speed. We also have a 35 mph speed limit on a lot of our lakes with some at 5mph. Speed, I would set your propshaft anywhere from 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 below pad. You may have a dud 23 tempest, so try to borrow a known good one. Remove as much gear/weight from the front as possible. You probably wont be using as much possitive trim as other boats youve owned-make small trim adjustments to allow enough time to for the hull to pack air (for lift). I would suspect 62-63 summer weather medium load and 65-66 light load cool to cold weather. John
No, the EFI and Carb engines were hotter than the 150 Opti. You will read that within these posts and others. The 150 Pro XS is a hotter motor than the straight 150 Opti, though only slightly. They both are under the older XR6 and EFI models.
I also have an 11 Sabre FTD. 150 ProXS with a 24 Fury. This is the first gas powered boat Ive ever owned and the first (and only) bass boat I have ever ridden in under gas power.. so I have very little experience here. I did my first WOT run yesterday and hit 62 gps @ 5200 rpm, so Im pretty sure there is plenty speed left for an experienced driver/ setup guy to find. It was actually still climbing for me but started to chine walk on me and push my comfort level so I backed it down. I would think mid 60s wouldnt be a problem, if not high 60s by the experts? Not sure how worried I am to find out. Pretty sure Im not worried enough about it to be buying $500+ props… Just me tho. Anyway, hope that helps and you get it figured out. Would love to hear your results. Ohh, I was alone but 3/4 fuel and all my gear. Good luck.
Thanks to all for the replys. I will keep yall informed on my progress. Looking forward to some more good reads on here. Glad to be part of the BCB fam. and keep up the good work on this awesome web page. Very informative.
Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the site. Get some pics posted! Where are you located?
Living in central Ohio, the home of small lakes and tuff fishing. And we have plenty of snow right now, so looks like it could be a while till spring. Will be heading for Guntersville the last of April, very excited about taking the boat down there too.
Welcome Tim and sharp looking boat!.
