Was running my boat today it cranked fine and i ran about a quarter mile and it started losing power and went dead, cranked it back up and everything seemed fine and right after planing off it did the same thing and would not turn over anymore. There was no pop or unatural noise just went dead. When you turn the key it just makes one short lugging noise and thats it. It still goes in and out of gear normal and i have not hit anything with with the lower unit. The smartcraft guauge seems to be shorting out after it happens the screen will cut off and will dim when i try to crank it do not know if this is related or not. Jus wonderin if this seems like i might have popped a powerhead or something is wrong with the lower unit. Am a little disgusted i have proly only put a hour or 2 on the motor since i have had it.
You can pull the plugs and ck compression…on each cylinder this will tell you which one is screwed up.. I would take it to a shop with a good Merc wrench…. try putting a socket on top of the crank and turning it by hand ….will be easier if plugs are out… sounds like you lost a cylinder…..ck the top left (from back) first. Look for metal that has detonated on the plugs (Aluminum) What ever it is, it dont sound good….Cpt.Gary Harlan (Harlo) USCG Liscd Fishing Guide Tishomingo, MS Roger Stegalls Professional Guide Service Sponsors: BassCat (of course!), Strike King, Falcon Graphite Rods, Gary Yammamoto Custom Baits
It sounds electrical to me. I am nott sure if those things have an alternator or stator to generate power to engine and recharge battery. I had a Force engine that had same thing happen. and it turned out to be the stator
What did the smart gauges say the second, you were running and the motor cut out? Anything? Do you get the chirp when you turn your key on? I had the same scenerio and I found a bad splice on the smart guage wiring, at the fwd bottom area of the engine cowl area. When the splice was “open”, and I turned the key on, I got no chirp, motor would crank all day, but not start. Smart gauges would dim some while I tried to start it. I got the motor to start by trimming the motor up and down to get it to work. Then isolated it to the splices with the key “on”, and moving the smart gauge harness(s) around with my fingers. Not sure if this is your same issue or not. Mine is a 06, 200 Opti. Good luck. I am off to Palestine for the weekend. Hope you get it resolved asap!
I hate to say it but it sounds to me like you cold seized it..Heres a link to what Im talking about http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zerothread/25496 I hope Im wrong…..Sherm
took to the mech today will know something Monday. brewcat my smartcraft gauge dims when I try to crank now too. Thanks for the help hoping I did not blow it up before I even get to fish a tourny out of it ha ha
read your old post sherm and wish I had known that beforehand water temp was around 50 so that could be it but I sure hope not
Firefighter, That doesnt sound good. Hopefully, its not the worst, but let us know what you find out. Ive got the same year Opti and luckily was warned during the sale about the cold-seize issue. Since I bought this boat, I seldom go any more during the cold months and if I do, its lots of warm-up time and no hard holeshots. Keeping that engine carbon-free is also very important.
Found out yesterday that the number 2 cylinder failed. They are going to to open the enginge up and see how much damage there is to the cylinder wall .
