Im looking at re-powering my 06 cougar ftd for no other reason that I want to. Its got a regular 225 optimax on it now and I can hit 70 but no more. Im thinking of putting a 250 pro xs on it. Are the two interchangable with controlls? Basically just switch the engines and maybe the oil res since I would be changing from opti oil to PP? What kind of gain could I expect? Is 80 reachable with the 25hp boost and the pro xs configuration on the 06 hull? I have also considered going to a 275 verado. I know the top end wouldnt be there like the pro xs but I do like the concept of the verado, and since I plan to own this boat for a long time the resale or economics doesnt really concern me. I just dont know how much trouble changing out all the controlls and gauges and all the other stuff would be. Anybody have any performance numbers with the 275 verado and the 06 cougar hull?
They should be interchangeable, though that is right in the middle of a harness change. We are not sure that it is feasible to make that investment in your rig, with the engine not being an OEM install and at the better value of a new boat package. We do not often recommend it on a boat this age, and it is right on the line to where you may be better off to swap up. Perhaps using the Loyalty Program that was extended through 2009? We think you would be better suited for that situation or a Cougar Advantage Elite which is your present rig with the CAE console, if you prefer that floor plan. The Verado controls are many more dollars and we know that is too much to invest here.
That rig should run faster than that!…What prop and prop shaft height are you running? How much gear are you carrying? Get yourself a 26 Fury before you give up on that motor!
I agree with Clint. Something isnt right. Im no expert but I would do some serious investigating before I sink that much coin in a new power plant.
True dat. My partners 07 Cougar runs 74.5 with a regular Opti and 26 Tempest. He has the Detwiler and carries enough tackle to supply a small army. Look at some adjustments before you spend that kind of money.
Cmon Clint….its not that much tackle! Just enough to fill two isles from Academy!
Alright…two aisles from Academy…and one aisle from Bass Pro, 1/2 aisle from Tackle Warehouse, and some Army Surplus sniper camo…still waiting for you to let me slap that Fury on your boat to satisfy my curiosity though!
I repowered my 06 Puma with a new 250 Pro XS. I plan on keeping my boat for a long time, and its a good thing because I will be upside down on my boat for a long time. I think BassCat has a valid point. To me it just depends on how long you are going to keep your current boat. I love my Puma, and it has a lifetime warranty.
BCB can you give us more info regarding loyalty program? You noted that having an older one might be better to upgrade than sinking money in the older one. Moose
moosegorilla, The loyalty program is special pricing on three models. They are for previous customers and their direct family members. The boats are special packages and equipment to reduce pricing and maybe allow an owner of older models to step up some. The equipment matches the package name behind the boat models. Puma Advantage Elite Pantera IV Advantage Elite Sabre FTD Vision Tour This has been taken advantage of by a good many owners this season. The packages are excellent values and your dealer should be able to help you on this.
