Need a bit of help guys. Took the Cat out this weekend and broke her in. Of course any self respecting bassman wants to get his rig running at its best. I am currently running a 26 Trophy Plus with the motor 3 1/4 below pad. The hole shot is pretty good but it does not seem that I can get all the RPMSs out of her. After break in I opened it up a few times and could only get her to 67mph(gps) at 5400 rpms and the boat started to chine real bad. I know that chine is something that you have to deal with, but I want to minimize it. It also is pretty stiff in the steering with a rooster tail as tall as the motor. All of this sounds pretty normal. My main question…..WHAT WOULD A 25 POWERTECH TRO4 DO TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BOAT? I have read on the board that a 27 Tempest does great on this boat. The 25 4 blade should perform as well as the 27 but with less top end, right? The 25 TRO4 did a great job on my Skeeter ZX225. It was a rocket out of the hole and was strong all the way to the top. Just hoping that I can match that result with my CAT. Your help is greatly appreciated… Oh, I thought my bug was smooth. Not even close. The CAT rode my better and smoother that the bug ever did. Glad I made the switch. I could not be happier with the quality of the boat.. Thanks
Dont play with any propeller until you figure out how to drive it and play with engine height. Have someone drive the rig who knows how to, and if there is steering wheel torque, lower that engine. BCB
A 27 Tempest does well, but again it depends on the load. As mentioned above, stay with what you have until you get the driving down. In addition, the 4 blade Trophy will be a little more forgiving in the driving aspects.
You definatlely need to learn to drive it first. When you get to where you can drive it, the rpms will get up there close to where they should be. I ran that prop on my boat for a year and it ran great. I just get a little more speed out of the 27 tempest. The driving will come with time, Ive been there and it can get frustrating learning this process and nothing is better than some seat time and someone that can drive the boat as well to help show you. As Phil said, the trophy is a little easier to drive then the tempest.
that is the same setup that I have. My boat starts to chine walk about 67 but I have learned to drive it to low 70s but there is more. My son has had it to 74.1 GPS. That appears to be about as good as its going to get, and that is fine with me. It is really nice and easy to drive about 65. I got mine in Aug 07 and love it.
I bought my P-2 last June. Its amazing to me how my boat handles at 70 plus now compared to when I first got behind the wheel. I use to start wobbling after 65. It doesnt seem like Im doing anything differiantly now, but it handles great no matter how fast Im going. It seems like when I stopped trying to think about how I should be driving and just relaxed, it all came together, if that makes sense. If you have the room, go into a long sweeping left hand turn and crank it. Going left makes it easier on the chine walking. Once you get use to the boat handling well in a left turn, begin straitening out.
P.S. Im running a 26 Torphy on mine and it seems fine. I bought it with a 25 Tempest, and to be honest, its hard for me to tell the differiance, WOT is about the same, but the hole shot is better with the Trophy.
Some great ideas there guys. Ill keep those in mind.
I have been around BassCats for over 20 years with my other 86 Pantera with a 200 Evinrude. That old boat I could give it all it had and it never chine walked at all. When I bought my 05 Classic it was a different story. This new boat is much faster than my old one. I had to learn to drive and adjust for chine walking. Now it is all natural and I cant tell Im doing anything different than when I first got it except there is no chine walk. Like the rest have said, seat time will fix the chine walk and then you will get more out of your boat. Good Luck, Brian Hash
Thanks for all the replys. I am going out again this weekend and will play with it. I will keep everything the same until I get some more seat time. I guess its like anything else. I just expected to be able to drive it. Its not like I just starting driving a boat, but I see now every boat is different. Especially when you get to this class of boat. Again, thanks for all the help and I will keep you updated!
