I bought this boat used in July 13. I bought it straight out the shop as the seller had a new fuel pump installed. It ran like a champ until I put it up for the winter. Around September. I always used Stabil. I pulled it out this past weeked (Feb 1st) to change the lower unit oil and run it on muffs. It fired right up and idled fine. The next morning I filled it up and took it to the lake. Engine fired up and I putt-putted out to the boat lane. When I took off it seemed it was taking long than usual to get up to speed, plus I was taking it easy because it was its first run of the year but I kept pushing the throttle down. At first I thought something was under the hot foot but I checked and it was clear and I had it to the floor. I was only pushing out about 2300 rpm at full throttle and barely enough speed to begin to lift the nose of the boat a tad. About 10 mph Im guessing.Although it idled fine most of the time it did tend to die occasionally when shifting in to FWD gear. Im guessing its a fuel problem. Ive ordered new plugs and as soon as I get a chance I will change the fuel filter. Has anyone else had a problem like this? 2300 rpm at full throttle? Engine sounding fine other than not the usually “rev” when laying down on the gas?
I had a similar problem with a Mercury once and it turned out to be a bad coil.Dan
Possibly a bad stator……..it happens sometimes !
I had the same scenario on an Evinrude back in the day. It would idle just fine and once i put the throttle to it the motor would struggle and eventually die out. One thing i did was had my better half in the cockpit and i would go back and squeeze the bulb and the rude would want to run. I changed out the fuel line and bulb thinking air leak somewhere, turns out it was a bad fuel pump. Once i changed out the pump, she ran as good as a rude can all the way to the day i sold it.
Without any more information I can only afford a guess. It is a 1997 model and you just got it out of the shop for a fuel pump replacement. Could it be that the symptom was addressed with the fuel pump being replaced because of your fuel lines being affected by the ethanol and they are possibly breaking down and causing your problem? Do you follow that logic? You may still have the initial problem is what I am suggesting? This is only for your consideration as I have no more information. Only trying to help. Good luck and I hope you get it straight soon because I hate to have boat and engine problems too.Everyone should believe in something. I believe Ill just go fishing!
It could be as simple as a fouled plug, or a fuel system issue. Get it to your service center and have a tech check it out.
It very well could be. I follow you on that. It doesnt spit or sputter. Sounds fine. If covered I up the cowling and told you it was a 25hp motor you would think it was running fine just judging on top speed. It just lack the “get up and go”.
It doesnt die when I gas on it. Just only getting 2300 rpms at full throttle. The fuel pump is less than 9 months old. Not saying it couldnt be the problem. I would just hope it lasts longer than that.
I got new plugs today, some seafoam, and borrowed a compression tester from a friend. I will check the lines and filters as soon as I get a chance. I live in Louisiana and the weather has been pretty crappy lately so i have no idea when I will be able to get out there and tinker with it. But I will keep you guys updated and thanks for the advice or any advice in the future.
As above, it could be a bad stator or voltage regulators… I had a 95 Mariner that did similar one day out on the river. Noticed it was getting slower, then harder to start. Then noticed the brown smoke rather than gas/oil blue. If plugs/seafoam/compression tester are ok, fuel lines/ filter get the okay, then I wouldnt waste more time. Get it to a shop then. Its down time in regards to weather, so would be a good time to get that winter project taken care of.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
