Gentlemen, I have 2006 225 merc. Pro XS that needs a 200 hour service. I plan on changing water filters, plugs, water pump and lower unit grease. Do I need to change the thermostats or do you folks run them to failure? Anything else at this time? Thanks

We would not change the spark plugs till they indicate its necessary.

Did you mean thermostats or spark plugs?. Do you mean run them until it starts skipping and running bad? Thanks

Change filterswater pump unit greaseStop there unless the engine shows you it needs it. Two stroke engines generally foul a plug all at once and they seldom last till the tip is worn or carboned. Usually the carbon causes the fouling as it begins to develop and you will loose one cylinder. BCB

On this same note re the lower end: filters, water pump, unit grease How often should this be done? Every season, say if fishing using main engine 40 – 50 hrs. per year or more or less often. Thanks

You actually should replace the bleed lines and oil lines on older engines after about ten years.

I have my engine serviced annually, lower unit, water pump, plugs, thermostats, fuel filter, batteries checked, etc,,, And wheel bearings serviced every other year. I do this as preventative, and yes, it is an expense, but I dont want any issues on the water or on the road.I am also able to do maintenance myself, but would rather have my capable shop do it since they can catch some things I may not recognize.It is also important for me to know and support those I trust to do my work, and this is my philosophy on all my vehicles. Thanks for the help. One last question. Whats involved in checking the reeds? I found my manual and it says check “carbon reeds” for cracking. Is that a big deal?
