200 Mercury EFI RPM limits?

I have a buddy that just bought a 2003 Pantera Classic with a 200 Mercury EFI (2.5L). Im trying to find out the safe RPM range before attempting to work on his motor set up. I found something online that suggested 7500 RPM, but Im thinking that may be for a racing engine. Can anyone give a RPM limit for this motor. It has a 25P Trophy running about 60mph at 5400. I think this can be improved significantly. Compression checked at 115-120 on all cylinders. Thanks.Kent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax

There should be a sticker on the motor mount that shows max rpm for the motor. I would guess around 5800.

You wont hurt a thing at 6,000rpms !

I have the same motor, my Mercury dealer/Bass Cat dealer said 5850 is ideal. Im running a 24 Fury on my 200 on a Cougar. Im pulling 5900 rpms at 67mph with a full tank and a tournament load.

Somewhere around 2003 to 2004 Mercury 200 2.5 engines went from no rev limiter to 5850, or 5750 and 5650 for the carbureted version.

I had a 97 Merc 200 EFI…no limiter, and would let it wind out to 6k rpms. But like BC said, somewhere in the early 2000s, they added a rev limiter……..in which case you would know by the beeping! Too many variables at this point. What is the engine height, what kind of weight is he running, light/moderate/heavy, how much gas/livewells full? I ran my 2001 model 200 efi in the 6000-6200 rpm range for years and its still running great on a friend of mines rig. Those 2.5s like to be revved up and unless you have a limiter ( which you may) I wouldnt hesitate to prop that thing to turn at least 6000 lightly loaded. If not, your hole shot will suffer with the 2.5 liter. I had the 2.5 liter on my classic and turning a 25″ trophy at 6000 + rpms it would run 76 mph with just me in it. It was a very good running prop combo on my 2.5 liter. Max recommended RPM was 5850 if I remember correctly but on a motor with no warranty, Id spin it a little higher. Thats just been my experience. I gotta friend with a 98 225 EFI with 500 hours on it and he has been turning 6100 WOT for years.

Totally different engine than a 2.5 block with the 225 EFI. Both will turn those RPMs though.

Thanks guys. I was just wanting to know the ideal max RPMs before we started making adjustments with props or engine heights. I will try to get closer to 5850 and then start making small adjustments.
