Will a 2001 Cougar be an all fiberglass boat with the lifetime warranty. Also, any known problems with a 2001 Mercury Optimax 225. ThanksKentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
All Bass Cats from 2000 on are eligible for Warranty transfer, see your Bass Cat dealer for details … have engine checked by a certified Merc wrench.BCB Admin
BCB will officially answer the warranty Qs. As far as the boat itself, great boat. I own an 02 cougar with a 250 yamaha. I love everything about it. Great ride and screaming fast.
I believe some of the 2000 models and all of the 2001 and up are all composite “fiber glass” materials and yes the lifetime warranty is available for a small registration fee on the all fiberglass models. If I am wrong it wont be long before someone corrects me. Good luck.
A 2001 would be an All Fiberglass hull with a transferrable Lifetime Warranty. The hull is not under the term composite as used in the industry, as this includes dissimilar materials. It is an all fiberglass hull with only the resin products and flake not being fiberglass. No other hull we know of has the ability to claim this process and construction techniques. The warranty is transferrable pending not documentation is found of issues besides normal operation and it also registers the boat for Quest, at a $100 fee presently. Other “all composite” or “composite” hulls have some other materials in their transom, floor or stringers and bracing. Those usually are a foam urethane board or other product. Sometimes even aluminum which does not bond well at all to fiberglass. Which is why we totally cover a seat base mount. If we pull one out we can tap the fiberglass loose easily. As for the 225 Opti, have a compression check run on the cylinder leak down. If thats good and runs well, pull the history on the engine through a Mercury dealer and make a decision. Good Luck in your diligence!BCB
Thanks guys. We actually just found out that this is not an Opti, but a 225 EFI. Does that change any opinions. We have checked the history of the motor, and there has not been any warranty work on this engine. No compression check so far. Thanks again.KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
I like the efi. Old school raw power. All it takes is a little extra gas and oil. Used, Id rather have the efi.
I have a 2001 Cougar with a 225 EFI. My dealer said run it til it quits, evidently a good motor. One of the problems I experienced that the dealer corrected is the fuel line. The interior line will have a tendency to crack and break, which is not visible simply by looking at the fuel line (the outside of the fuel line is just a cover). These flakes and pieces of the fuel line will stop up the fuel filter inside the engine and cause some issues. I had the fuel pump rebuilt also, the ethanol mix in fuel will cause the rubber components to dissolve. Aside from a new water pump and lower unit oil being changed every year, there is really nothing to do to the engine. My experience, the 225 is a good engine but has poor fuel mileage. The up side? they will rock and roll if you want it to. Before having the fuel line replaced, my boat would GPS at 72 mph (thats with 52 gal of fuel, 2 people in the boat, and all of my fishing junk). I havent had it out since being worked on but I am really anxious to see the numbers. (work has kept me from going to the lake)
The EFI version is a very good engine. They do like plenty of fuel, plus the TPI will have to be messed with occasionally to keep it adjusted and those are the only drawbacks. BCB
